I Was His Wife, She Was His Everything Chapter 02
I made an appointment at the hospital for a prenatal checkup.
The doctor told me I was a little over two months pregnant and that the baby was developing
normally.
But I was suffering from severe malnutrition.
After hesitating for a long time, I finally asked,
“How much does an abortion cost?”
The doctor looked up at me in surprise.
“An abortion? You’re not exactly young. Does your husband know you’re pregnant?”
I lowered my head.
For a moment, I didn’t know how to answer.
The doctor sighed, sounding genuinely regretful.
“An abortion would cost around a thousand dollars.”
I glanced at my phone.
I’d just used a borrowed credit card to pay for the examination.
There were only three hundred dollars of available credit left.
As soon as I left the hospital, I headed straight for Hayes Group with my medical report in hand.
I still wanted to ask Ethan about everything face-to-face.
If I decided to keep the baby, the cost of future checkups and medical care would add up quickly.
When I reached the executive floor, Veronica stopped me outside the CEO’s office.
“Mr. Hayes is in a meeting. What do you need, Ms. Miller?”
I clutched the medical report in my
hand.
My voice came out small and hesitant.
“I’m really pregnant. If I’m going to keep the baby, I’m going to need money…”
Veronica took one quick look at the report before tossing it back at me.
“Ms. Miller, you’re really not giving up, are you?”
Her expression was full of contempt.
“Now you’ve even gone as far as getting a fake pregnancy report. What are you planning to do next month? Pretend you had a miscarriage so you can squeeze another medical bill out of Mr. Hayes?”
Several employees in the executive office turned toward us.
“Seriously? Doesn’t Mr. Hayes give her plenty of money every month? And she’s still faking a pregnancy to get more?”
“She really treats Mr. Hayes like an ATM.”
With every word they said, my head sank lower.
Veronica walked past me, pressed the button for the elevator, and pointed toward the doors as they opened.
“Ms. Miller, please don’t disrupt our work. You need to leave.”
I slipped the medical report back into my bag and stepped into the elevator amid the whispers and laughter.
When I reached the lobby, I heard Veronica on the phone, scolding the receptionist.
“Don’t let gold diggers like her into the building again.”
I quickened my pace and hurried out of the office tower.
I placed a hand over my stomach.
“Baby… what am I supposed to do?”
Then I caught sight of the Hermès bag hanging from my arm.
An idea suddenly occurred to me.
I rushed to the nearest luxury resale shop.
The owner took one look at me hurrying through the door and immediately realized I was desperate
for cash.
He offered me fifteen thousand dollars.
It was the limited-edition Hermès bag Ethan had given me for my birthday that year.
It was nearly impossible to buy, even if you had the money.
But I had no choice.
I sold it.
I’d spent so long living paycheck to paycheck that seeing the money hit my account finally gave me
a sense of security.
That night, the story of the CEO’s wife selling a designer handbag made its way onto the online
gossip sites.
A photo showed me handing the bag to the shop owner.
The comments were brutal.
[She spends like crazy and now she’s selling her bags to pay off her debts.]
[Looks like their marriage is falling apart. She’s probably trying to cash out and run.]
Before long, Ethan called me.
His voice was low and tense.
“Are you really that desperate for money? You actually sold the birthday gift I gave you?”
He paused.
“No wonder Veronica told me you showed up this afternoon with a fake pregnancy report asking for
money.”
I opened my mouth to explain.
He didn’t give me the chance.
“If you need money, you can talk to Veronica. Why lie about something like this?”
His voice was exhausted.
And beneath the exhaustion was unmistakable disappointment.
Every explanation I’d been about to give died in my throat.
ANI managed to say was,
“Okay. I understand.”
The call ended.
I still hadn’t decided whether I was going to keep the baby.
The fifteen thousand dollars that had just hit my account, along with the money Nora had lent me, was transferred out almost immediately.
Then Veronica sent me a message.
[Mr. Hayes said you clearly don’t know how to control your spending, so he’s taking the money
back for now. I’ll hold onto it for you.]
