The living room was warm.
Kaelen’s jacket lay tossed across the sofa. Two used bowls sat on the table beside a half-finished mug of milk.
And I was curled in his arms, a blanket draped loose over my shoulders. The marks along my neck and collarbone weren’t even close to hidden.
There was nothing left to explain.
Even the air was thick with our mingled scents.
The snow wolf brothers’ faces darkened at the same time.
Jaxon spoke first. His voice came out scraped raw.
“Who the fuck is he?”
Kaelen’s arm tightened around me. His tone didn’t shift.
“The one keeping her warm now.”
And then, just to drive it home, he dipped his head and nuzzled the crook of my neck.
The gesture was so natural it was devastating.
Something behind Jaxon’s eyes nearly detonated.
For three years, what I had with the snow wolf brothers had never gone past the contract. A business arrangement, nothing more.
People had speculated, of course. But I knew the truth.
It wasn’t that I’d never wanted more. It was that they didn’t.
One year, I’d worked up the nerve to ask if we could change the terms and make it a real mate bond.
Silas had said nothing for a long time.
Jaxon had looked at me, one corner of his mouth barely lifting.
“Elara. Don’t push your luck.”
I never brought it up again.
But now, days later, here I was with another beast shifter in my home, letting him stake his claim
right where they could see.
Jaxon’s gaze was fixed on Kaelen, and it looked like he wanted to tear him apart with his bare hands.
Kaelen didn’t seem to mind. If anything, he leaned into it.
He buried his face against my shoulder and murmured, just loud enough for the room to hear.
“These the two snow wolves you used to keep?”
“Touchy, aren’t they?”
“No wonder you tossed them out.”
Jaxon surged forward.
Silas caught him by the arm.
But Silas’s own expression was downright lethal.
He looked at me, and his voice dropped low.
“We haven’t finalized anything yet. Don’t you think bringing someone new home this fast is out of
line?”
The floating comments exploded across my vision.

I stared at those words, and a bitter laugh caught in my throat.
Funny how that worked.
They’d traveled through a snowstorm with the fox shifter, shielded her from harm, and walked so close the lines blurred, and the comments called it the real couple heating up.
But when I found someone to keep me alive, it was disgusting.
I set the bowl down and looked at the two of them in the doorway.
“Out of line?”
“Didn’t we agree to end this a long time ago?”
jaxon’s jaw clenched.
“Ending the contract doesn’t mean you can just…”
“Can’t what?”
I cut him off.
“Can’t find someone who’ll actually keep me alive while you two are busy playing house with
someone else?”
They both went silent.
So I told them. Everything I’d seen in the comments, I laid it all out.
“Chloe was cold. Silas, you gave her your parka.”
“She slipped. Jaxon, you caught her.”
“You two walked on either side of her through a snowstorm, took hits for her, got hurt for her.”
“If she already mattered that much to you, what right do you have to walk back in here and question
me?”
The room went still.
The words left Jaxon’s mouth before he could stop them.
“How do you know any of that?”
Silas was faster. His gaze sharpened, and I could see the pieces clicking together.
“That night, when you kicked us out…”
“And then wanted to end the contract out of nowhere.”
“You can see them too. Can’t you.”
My breath caught. And in that second, it hit me.
I wasn’t the only one who could see the floating comments.
The comments across my vision went haywire.
