He Let Her Move Into His Dorm, I Moved Out of the Country Chapter 05
Adrian’s hands went weak, and his phone clatteredÂ
to the floor.Â
He did not believe what the officer had said.Â
He refused to believe that Lauren would leave himÂ
so decisively and so quietly without leaving him a single word or making even one phone call.Â
He and Lauren had grown up together asÂ
childhood sweethearts.Â
They had more than twenty years of history, fiveÂ
years as a couple, and three years of engagementÂ
behind them.Â
After so many years together, after loving eachÂ
other for so many years, how could Lauren bear toÂ
do it? How could she have the heart to leave himÂ
alone?Â
Adrian clung to that self–deception and tried toÂ
find something that would prove him right.Â
He searched from the living room to the bedroom,Â
trying to find the matching things they used toÂ
have as a couple: matching slippers, matchingÂ
toothbrushes, and matching mugs.Â
But one by one, all he found was his own half.Â
Not only did he fail to prove the tiny hope buried inÂ
his heart that Lauren had not truly left, everythingÂ
he found only confirmed what the officer had said.Â
Lauren had left on her own, willingly and deliberately.Â
Adrian sat on the floor of the study, holding theÂ
only photo he could still find of himself and Lauren, grief spreading through him.Â
He could not accept that Lauren had really been cruel enough to leave.Â
That was more than twenty years of history. Just because he had neglected her for three years, did those twenty years really not deserve even a littleÂ
consideration?Â
Adrian looked at the photo in his arms, at Lauren smiling so openly and happily, and his eyes went unfocused.Â
A ping pulled Adrian back to the present.Â
He looked at his phone. It was a message from Mia.Â
Mia: [Professor Grant, is Ms. Reed still mad thatÂ
you brought me to your home?]Â
Mia: [If Ms. Reed is still upset, I can comeÂ
apologize to her right away.]Â
In the past, when Adrian saw a message like that,Â
he would have immediately comforted Mia andÂ
told her there was no need.Â
But now, Adrian’s eyes and mind were filled withÂ
only Lauren.Â
The scene from the day he left for his businessÂ
trip, when he and Lauren confronted each other atÂ
home, rose before his eyes.Â
At the time, all he had thought about wasÂ
protecting his student. He had wanted Lauren toÂ
be more understanding and stop arguing with him.Â
over something so small.Â
So he had ignored Lauren’s feelings the entireÂ
time.Â
Looking back now, when Lauren had questionedÂ
him so sharply that day, her eyes had clearly beenÂ
filled with despair and sadness.Â
And what had he been doing then?Â
He had been protecting Mia. He had beenÂ
demanding that Lauren take care of Mia. He hadÂ
called Lauren a hysterical shrew, and he had evenÂ
slapped her.Â
At that thought, Adrian raised his hand andÂ
slapped himself hard across the face.Â
Tears blurred his eyes. Adrian looked at theÂ
smiling Lauren in the photo and wanted toÂ
apologize, but when he opened his mouth, all thatÂ
came out were choked sobs.Â
He did not know how much time had passedÂ
before the dark sky brightened again.Â
Looking at Lauren in the photo, Adrian made upÂ
his mind.Â
He had to find Lauren and bring her back.Â
He admitted that he had done wrong over the pastÂ
three years.Â
But Lauren loved him so much. Even now, she had only left because she was disappointed in him.Â
So as long as he apologized, as long as he changed, Lauren would forgive him and comeÂ
back to him.Â
But before Adrian could put that thought intoÂ
action, he received a legal notice from Lauren’sÂ
attorney.Â
Lauren had filed a claim against him, demandingÂ
that he return the money from their joint accountÂ
that had been transferred without her permission.
