I Stayed Widowed for 30 Years, Only for My Dead Husband to Resurrect with My Bestie Chapter 07

Arthur dragged himself back home that night.

I was curled up on the couch in silk pajamas and a sheet mask, lazily flipping through a magazine.

I looked up when the door opened, held out a glass of water, and smiled. “Hey, babe. Long day?

Here.”

Arthur took the glass, dropped onto the couch beside me, and exhaled like he’d been holding his

breath all day.

I peeled off the mask and turned to face him, eyes bright. “Babe, did you see that airport thing on the news today? Insane.’

Arthur’s hand froze around the glass. “What news?”

“That thing with Chloe! Her dad and sister practically ripped her clothes off right there at the airport. It’s everywhere. Honestly, what did she expect? You sleep with someone else’s husband, sooner or later it catches up with you. She had it coming.”

Arthur’s mouth twitched. He didn’t answer.

I kept going like I hadn’t noticed. “And Oliver, wow. Can you believe he stood there and told the whole world Chloe’s his girlfriend? Even paid off her dad. What’s his angle?”

Arthur took another sip. His voice came out thin. “Oliver’s a loyal guy. That’s all.”

I laughed. “Come on. Isn’t Oliver engaged? She’s already wearing the ring. If she finds out her man just publicly claimed another woman’s child, you don’t think that’s going to be a problem?”

Something flickered across Arthur’s face. His grip on the glass tightened.

The comments drifted past.

[The villainess is twisting the knife and landing every hit]

[The ML is barely holding it together his poker face is CRACKING]

[Hahaha sold out your bro and now your own wife is roasting you for it how does that feel]

I leaned in. Close enough that he couldn’t look away. “Babe. You swore to God you’d never go near Chloe again. Remember? You didn’t see her today… right?”

Arthur went rigid.

He forced something that wasn’t quite a smile. “Of course not. I’ve been in meetings all day.”

I pressed a hand to my heart, eyes wide with mock relief. “Thank God. Because remember, you said if you ever went near her again, lightning would strike you dead. And I just couldn’t bear to lose

you.”

Arthur couldn’t look at me.

[That last line from the villainess I am SCREAMING]

[The ML is dying inside rn guaranteed]

[Serves him right!! Swore on his life and now he can’t take it back lmaooo]

Arthur shot up so fast the couch shifted beneath him. “I… work stuff. I need to handle something in the study. I’ll be back.”

He practically fled. His legs buckled halfway to the door, and he nearly went down.

I picked up my phone and texted Oliver’s fiancée. [Emma, a man who’ll cover for his friend’s affair today is a man who’ll cover for his own tomorrow. Just something to think about.]

Arthur drove to the mansion he’d bought for Chloe. She was already crying when he walked in, clinging to his neck, face buried in his chest, voice small and desperate.

“You said I was the one you love. You said you’d divorce her. When, Arthur?”

Arthur stroked her hair. “Just a little longer. Once the baby’s here, I’ll make it official. You and our son, right by my side. No more hiding.”

“Then why are you still buying her things? You gave her shares in the company, Arthur. What about our son?”

Arthur kissed her forehead. “Baby, she’s a Vance. Her family’s company isn’t as big as ours, but it’s still worth something. I need her to stay happy a little longer. Just play along, okay? When this is over, everything I have goes to our son.”

I stood in the house across the street, earpiece in, and listened to every word. Something inside me went cold, not all at once, one sentence at a time.

Arthur came home just before dawn, looking like the night had chewed him up and spit him out.

Chloe’s marks were all over him again. I didn’t blink.

I held out a folded document. “Dr. Harrison couldn’t reach you. He said you need to come in for a follow-up.”

Arthur took it without looking at it, tossed it on the table. “I get a physical every year. What could possibly be wrong? Doctors love making a big deal out of nothing.”

He was asleep on the couch before I could respond.

I smiled. I knew Arthur. The harder anyone pushed him to go to the hospital, the more he’d dig in

his heels.

Which meant he’d never open that report. He’d never see the words staring up from the page: terminal stomach cancer.

I crumpled the report into a ball and tossed it in the trash.

[WAIT she just threw away his cancer diagnosis?? Just like that??]

[The villainess is literally trying to get the ML killed]

[I mean she DID hand it to him and he didn’t even look at it… that’s on him]

[Serves him right!! He made her lose her baby and mourn him for 30 years in the last life getting cancer is the LEAST he deserves]
