He Married My Best Friend, Then Lost Me Forever Chapter 09
My mother screamed in terror.Â
“Zachary! What are you doing?”Â
When I heard the commotion from the living room, I set down what I was working on and rushed out.Â
“What happened?”Â
Zachary was like a beast released from a cage.Â
His eyes were bloodshot as he drove punch after punch into Caleb’s face.Â
Caleb had no strength to fight back.Â
He could only take the blows head–on.Â
At the sight, my blood boiled.Â
I rushed over and shoved Zachary away with allÂ
my strength.Â
“Zachary, are you insane? This is my house. GetÂ
Out!”Â
Zachary froze in place.Â
The shock in his eyes slowly turned into hurt andÂ
disappointment.Â
Ever since we were children, I had never once saidÂ
anything cruel to him.Â
Before I joined the Army, I used to trail after himÂ
everywhere, calling, “Zachary, wait up!”Â
After basic training, before I even fully understoodÂ
what love was, I started calling him Zach.Â
No one else called him that, and I wanted to be theÂ
one person who was special.Â
No matter how much he pretended to dislike itÂ
back then, he would only laugh in irritation and letÂ
me call him whatever I wanted.Â
Later, after we got together, I would call him by hisÂ
full name when we fought and call him a jerk.Â
But I had never done what I did now.Â
I had never used his full name and told him to getÂ
out.Â
“Lillian, you’re telling me to get out because ofÂ
him?”Â
His eyes were full of hurt, and even his voiceÂ
trembled as he spoke.Â
It was not because of Caleb.Â
I was only letting out all the anger I had beenÂ
holding in for the past few days.Â
I looked at him and did not explain.Â
“Sophia is still waiting for you at home. StopÂ
acting crazy here and go back.”Â
“Do you know tonight is my wedding night? Do youÂ
know what I’ll do if I go back?”Â
He was gambling.Â
Gambling on whether I would get jealous.Â
Gambling on whether I would ask him to stay.Â
But I only smiled.Â
“You and Sophia are married. Whatever happens between you two is only natural.”Â
“Lillian!”Â
Zachary’s body trembled slightly, whether from anger or something else.Â
My mother did not understand what was going on, so she tried to persuade him kindly.Â
“Zachary, Lily is right. Sophia is still waiting for you at home. Tonight is your wedding night. Instead ofÂ
being with her, what are you doing here?”Â
“If people find out, there’s no telling how muchÂ
they’ll mock Sophia.”Â
“I don’t care how much they laugh at her!”Â
With the reckless air of someone ready to burnÂ
everything down, Zachary stepped forward andÂ
grabbed my wrist.Â
“Lillian, you are my girlfriend. Your opinion is the only one I care about. Just say the word, and I’llÂ
divorce Sophia tomorrow.”Â
“What the hell are you talking about?”Â
My mother was shocked and furious. She strodeÂ
over and shoved him away.Â
“Zachary, have you really lost your mind? If anyone hears you say that, how is Lily supposed to holdÂ
her head up in this town?”Â
“And what do you mean Lily is your girlfriend? Isn’tÂ
Sophia your girlfriend?”Â
“No!” Zachary’s eyes were full of hurt andÂ
helplessness. “Mrs. Miller, I’m the one who has always been Lily’s boyfriend. I was the one whoÂ
refused to come back with her and meet you.”Â
Before he could finish, a hard slap landed across his face.Â
My mother’s hands were trembling, and the usual kindness in her eyes was gone.Â
“Zachary, you must be tired from everything today. Go home and rest.”Â
“Mrs. Miller…”Â
“Get out of my house!”Â
It was the first time I had ever seen my mother truly angry.Â
The eyes that were usually gentle and smiling held only indescribable fury and heartbreak now.
