I Broke Up With Him After The Concert Kiss Chapter 03

I shoved the door open hard.

The noise made them jump apart, flustered.

Before I could speak, a nurse walked in with a chart.

“Visitor, keep it down.”

“The patient just recovered from a sudden physical procedure, keep quiet and avoid improper contact…”

The nurse’s words died in her throat.

She stared at the awkward scene, then at me in the doorway.

She looked down, pushing her cart back out.

The room fell dead silent.

I felt nothing but absurdity and cold amusement.

“You told me she always took proper precautions.”

Silas quickly buttoned Lila’s shirt, shielding her behind him.

He wouldn’t meet my eyes, running a frustrated hand through his hair.

“Only once. The day of your parents’ death anniversary.”

I was struck numb.

The day after the SAT was my eighteenth birthday—and the anniversary of my parents’ death.

I’d cried alone at their grave all day, desperate for them.

They’d answered a call and vanished. When they finally showed up, they’d brushed it off as bad service.

“The more you cried over the phone, the more their emotions got out of hand.”

Silas’s lips curved into a lazy, satisfied smile.

“They lost their sense of restraint in the moment.”

“We rushed to the grave to find you afterward—forgot the pills.”

Lila scrambled to put her clothes on, reaching for my hand.

“Elowen, listen, it was an accident…”

Slap.

I raised my hand and slapped her hard across the face.

Lila covered her cheek, tears flooding her eyes, not making a sound.

“Elowen!”

Silas’s face turned red with rage, lifting his hand to hit me.

Lila threw herself at him, grabbing his arm tight.

“Silas, don’t! It’s my fault! Let her be mad at me!”

As they struggled, a sharp clink echoed.

The family heirloom locket fell out of Lila’s pocket, rolling across the floor.

I bent to pick it up.

A heavy shoe slammed down on it first.

Silas bent to pick up the locket, clutching it in his hand.

“You gave it to Lila. It’s hers now.”

I stared straight into his eyes.

“Do you want my mom, watching from above, to see the two of you fooling around with her locket?”

Silas’s face turned dark.

“Elowen, don’t push your luck!”

Furious, he raised his hand and hurled the locket against the tile floor.

It shattered into pieces.

I shook all over, dropping to my knees, grabbing the shards even as they cut my fingers.

Silas sneered at my desperate state.

“You’ve got no parents. What do you know about love?”

“All the love you have is what Lila and I gave you!”

Lila’s eyes widened in shock.

“Silas! How could you say that to her!”

She stumbled toward me, trying to stop me.

I stepped aside, standing straight.

Clutching the broken locket tight, my palm stung with faint painful marks.

“Lila.”

I looked at her soft, innocent face.

“My parents must regret saving you that day.”

With that, I turned and walked away without a second glance.

Stepping out of the hospital, my phone buzzed.

A text from my aunt:

[Elowen, flight’s booked. 3 PM tomorrow. I’ll pick you up.]
