My Best Friend Stole an Heir, So I Cleared House as the Lawful Wife Chapter 08

My eyes met Camilla’s. I smiled at her, slow and contemptuous. Her face flushed red, and she

screamed at me like a madwoman.

“Olivia, you lying snake. You tore my home apart. I’ll never forgive you.”

I turned away. I had no interest in their twisted faces anymore. People like them never needed enemies. Give them enough rope, and they would hang themselves. For years, they had used Damian’s constant absence on Family business as cover. They smiled to my face and stabbed me behind my back. They tortured me for three full years. Now Damian had finally seen them clearly. After we walked out of the hospital, Damian gently took my hand.

“What do you want to eat tonight?” he asked. “I’ll cook. No Family business today. Just you.”

Time moved on. My belly grew more obvious, and the closer my due date came, the more uneasy I felt. Vera had not appeared for a long time, but I knew her too well. She was not the kind of person who gave up. To make sure nothing went wrong, Damian pushed aside two months of Family business and personally placed my hospital room under the highest protection level. He even had me move into the private hospital a month early. One week before my due date, I saw Vera sneaking around outside the window. She crouched in a corner of the garden, wearing a hat and sunglasses, her eyes sharp as she watched the building. Three days before my due date, Vera blocked Damian’s path. Her face was miserable as she accused him of something. Damian left with a cold expression. When he returned, he handed a risk report to the estate’s security chief.

Several more soldiers appeared outside my hospital room. Fear settled in my chest and would not leave. Ever since the doctor said I had trouble conceiving, I had wanted a child of my own so badly. I

had almost given up hope. But God had not only given me hope. He had given me twins. On the day

of delivery, Damian waited outside the room, anxious enough to wear a path into the floor. It was my first delivery, but the process went strangely smoothly. I lay on the delivery bed, soaked in

sweat, my fingers twisted in the sheets as I stared at the ceiling. The nurse brought the newborns to my side. They were tiny and wrinkled, but the moment I saw them, something fierce and tender locked into place inside me. These were my children. The children I had carried for ten months. The

children I had fought to bring into the world.

My blood flowed in their bodies. When I was pushed out of the delivery room, I saw Damian’s worried face at once. He did not even look at the babies first. He rushed to my bed and looked me over, his eyes dark with heartache. I was about to comfort him when a nurse screamed. No one knew how Vera had slipped past layer after layer of security. She threw herself beside the baby cart, her face twisted beyond recognition. The smug, saintly expression she used to wear was gone. Vera lunged for the babies, her long nails flashing toward the cart. The nurse threw herself in front of them. A dull smack cut through the hall. A bloody scratch opened from the side of the nurse’s face down to her neck. Vera shoved her aside and reached again. Damian moved first. One hard kick sent

Vera crashing into the glass partition.

The glass shattered and sprayed across the floor. Shards fell over Vera’s body and cut tiny wounds into her skin. Blood beaded from the cuts. Soon, her face was streaked red. She looked wretched and terrifying. Vera reached up and touched her face in disbelief. Tiny pieces of glass had sunk into the wounds. She broke down screaming. Then she grabbed a shard from the floor and rushed at me.

“Olivia, this is all your fault. I’m going to kill you.”

She blamed everything on me.

“You shameless woman. You dressed every day like you wanted every man in New York looking at

you.”
