Betrayal and Regret: The Donna Lost Her Child Chapter 01
My baby died less than ten days after I gave birth.
All because my husband, Ryan, wanted to win over Chloe, the widow of his late older brother.
Ignoring my protests, he took our baby-less than ten days old-to the island to vacation with Chloe.
My child was born premature. He couldn’t even leave the incubator, let alone go to an island.
I grabbed the hem of his shirt, knelt before him, and begged him through my tears.
“No! No, Ryan. Once the baby is a little stronger, he can stay with her for a few days. But right now he’s too
weak. Please…”
He didn’t care that I had just given birth. He kicked me to the ground.
“You’re my wife. Donna of the Vulture family. Chloe lost her baby from grief the day my older brother was
buried, and your baby was born healthy. What’s wrong with letting him spend a few days with Chloe?”
“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re scheming. You just don’t want Chloe to have any peace. You’re jealous
she was my first love. You’re a cold-hearted bitch!”
But just as he had finally cheered Chloe up and was about to head back with the baby-
He got a call from the family Consigliere.
“The little master’s body-seagulls have pecked it to pieces!”
I held a dagger to my own throat and begged the family Consigliere to tell me where Ryan was.
“Please. My baby is dying.”
It was the first time the family Consigliere had ever seen me so unhinged. To protect me from harming
myself, he told me the location.
Despite having just given birth, I rushed to the island where they were vacationing.
When I got there, I saw Ryan in the distance, busy taking photos of Chloe-while my baby had been left on
the beach, baking in the sun. His whole body was bright red.
My heart shattered. I rushed toward my child, ignoring the unhealed wound on my lower abdomen.
But a group of bodyguards stopped me.
“Sorry, ma’am. That section of the beach has been reserved by Mr. Ryan and his wife.”
I looked where he pointed. Ryan.
And apparently, his wife was Chloe.
No wonder he never told me where they were vacationing. He had another wife out there.
I swallowed the bitterness in my chest and called Ryan.
“Ryan! Tell your bodyguards to let me in!”
Puzzled, he glanced toward the bodyguards.
When he saw me, surprise flickered across his face, then his brow furrowed.
He stormed over and grabbed my wrist.
“Grace? Are you that clingy? You have to follow me everywhere? How many times do I have to explain-I’m
just taking Chloe out to clear her head! Can’t you just be content as my Donna?”
I kept my eyes fixed on my child. I barely heard a word he said.
Without the bodyguards blocking me, I shook off his hand and sprinted toward my baby.
When I felt my child’s breath, my clenched heart eased just a little.
I picked him up and started toward the hospital.
But Ryan stopped me.
“Grace, the kid’s fine out here getting some sun. Don’t come and cause trouble!”
His words sent rage blazing through me. I pointed at the baby and screamed.
“Are you blind?! His skin is burnt red! You goddamn bastard!”
Ryan frowned and snorted.
“Chloe said premature babies need extra sunlight. He’s not crying or fussing, so how could he be sunburned?
Don’t go around making false accusations against Chloe!”
Chloe?
Chloe again!
The baby lay limp in my arms, barely clinging to life, probably too weak to even cry anymore. And Ryan was
standing there taking photos with Chloe.
My nails dug deep into my palms. My fury at Ryan and anguish for my baby made the tears spill down my
face in an instant.
I didn’t want to keep fighting. I wiped my tears, picked up my child, and turned to leave.
“I have to get him to a hospital!”
Ryan stared coldly at me and didn’t move to stop me. But then Chloe started wiping at her eyes.
“Ryan, I know Grace doesn’t like me. She doesn’t want me near the baby. But is it so wrong that I just wanted
to pretend, for a moment, that I could be a mother too?”
Ryan tenderly wiped the tears from her face-then grabbed my arm.
“Grace, don’t you have a shred of decency? What’s the harm in giving Chloe this one thing? If my older
brother hadn’t saved you back then, you’d be dead right now!”
