His Assistant Called Me Ugly, So I Toppled His Dark Empire Chapter 02
I tried to count the years we had spent married.
Four years, I believed.
I was twenty-two when I snuck away from my boarding school in Europe to travel around New York.
I saw Leonardo at a private party and fell for him at first sight, then began to pursue him relentlessly.
He thought I was too young in the beginning.
But I stuck to him stubbornly, laying my whole heart out in front of him.
I sent him flowers, gifted him a Rolex watch, and even took the initiative to propose to him.
Onlookers whispered that I had no dignity as a young woman.
I never cared. If you truly loved someone, wasn’t it right to be brave about it?
We became a couple soon after.
We held our wedding ceremony at St. Patrick’s Church after one year of dating.
For four years of marriage, I walked on eggshells and devoted myself to him every single day.
Even the tiniest bit of warmth from him could brighten my entire world.
I noticed he became much happier after I got pregnant, and he paid me more attention than usual.
Yet a sense of unease gnawed at me constantly.
I kept messaging him over and over, asking if he loved me.
He never spoke the word love out loud, but he always replied gently that he would head home early.
Until that day, when someone got their hands on the private phone that not even I was allowed to touch, and sent those cruel words.
It finally dawned on me. He had never put me in his heart, not even for a second.
It was all over now. I had no more love left to give.
He assumed I had yielded after my long silence. He stepped over to me and leaned down to pull me into his arms.
“Stop overthinking this. I had the chef make you soup. Eat something and get some rest. I’ll take you out shopping tomorrow, it’s the weekend.”
“I terminated the pregnancy.”
My words were barely a whisper.
Leonardo froze completely.
His arms stayed suspended in the air, still reaching for me.
The only sound in the quiet living room was the steady ticking of the wall clock.
Tick. Tick. Tick.
He straightened up and stared down at me, as if he could not comprehend my words.
“What did you just say?”
I lifted my head and met his eyes, speaking clearly and deliberately.
“I said our child is gone. I went to the hospital right after those messages and had an abortion surgery.”
Color drained from Leonardo’s face bit by bit.
I’d known him for five years, and I had never seen him lose his composure.
He always stayed calm and composed around everyone, just like a precise machine.
But that machine broke down in that moment. The sight felt strange to me.
“You made this decision without talking to me first?”
A faint smile stayed on my lips. “Yes.”
“Sophia.” His voice trembled. “That was my child too.”
“I know.”
“You know?” His voice rose sharply, his eyes turning bloodshot. “And you still did this without telling me a single word? Do I mean nothing to you as your husband?”
He had never raised his voice to me before. We argued occasionally in the past, but he would only fall silent and wait for me to give in.
I laughed softly. “I never thought I’d see you fly off the handle, or see your eyes turn red. I always thought cold silence was the only way you treated me.”
Leonardo stared at me in shock, then suddenly grabbed my chin tightly, rage blazing in his eyes.
“Quit this nonsense! I told you those words weren’t from me. Why can’t you believe me?”
“That child belongs to both of us. You had no right to make such a huge decision all on your own.”
“If you’re bold enough to get rid of my child alone, then you owe me another one.”
He lowered his head and pressed his lips harshly against mine.
