Wait—Did I Steal Your Best Buddy While You Were ‘Missing’? HELL YES!! Chapter 09
After Sloane left, I went out, crossed my arms:
“Wow, you even fooled me.”
“If you knew, you never would’ve let me in.”
“What do you mean?”
Callan looked helpless. “Everyone knew I was Jasper’s buddy. If I’d been honest from the start, you wouldn’t have given me a
chance.
“So I figured-I’ll be the bad guy-”
“Seduce you, make you fall for me. All the blame on me.”
Callan had shown up as the guilty friend.
Taking care of every detail.
Without anyone knowing, he’d played this whole one man game just to win me over.
“What if it hadn’t worked?” I asked.
“Then that would’ve been okay too.”
Callan smiled gently. “At least when you were hurting. I was there. That would’ve been enough.”
I waved him off.
“Please, don’t just drop lines like that out of nowhere-it’s so cheesy.”
Then I quickly went inside and shut the door.
My cheeks were burning.
Heart racing like crazy.
Next morning, news hit-
Sloane had no one left. She’d already bailed out of LA in disgrace.
Her family’s business took a serious hit.
She’d never be a spoiled rich girl again.
But was I satisfied? Hell no.
Both messed up. Why did Jasper get to hide while she took all the heat?
I didn’t have dirt on Jasper, but I was sure someone did.
So I found Sloane on Instagram.
Sent her a DM from a burner account:
[omg i feel so bad for you~ it’s totally the guy’s fault why are you taking all the blame?? don’t let that scurabag get away with this!!]
Who says I can’t be a bitch too?
Just like I figured-Sloane was desperate for support.
Give her even a crumb and she’d go nuclear.
She started posting evidence of Jasper bullying kids back in school.
Middle school stuff, mostly.
Jasper had broken some kid’s arm pretty badly.
The Brennans paid off the family-threw money at them and made it disappear.
That same year, Jasper got named to some “model student” list.
Normally this stuff wouldn’t get much attention.
But Jasper’s family brand had just been in a business war with a competitor.
Their rival saw this as gold and immediately bought trending spots for Sloane’s posts.
Just like that, Jasper’s “good guy” image shattered.
Things spiraled fast.
More people came forward with dirt on Jasper.
He had zero chance of recovering.
Lucky for the Brennans, Jasper had a younger brother.
The family saw which way things were going and basically abandoned their firstborn.
Without his family’s protection, Jasper fell hard.
He spent his days drowning in alcohol.
He’d always been a heavy drinker. I’d tried to get him to cut back, but he said I was nagging.
Now it finally caught up.
One night, drunk out of his mind, Jasper got hit by a car.
Messed up his leg badly.
Doctor said he’d limp for the rest of his life.
Traffic cops checked the footage-Jasper ran a red light. Driver wasn’t at fault.
A few days later, I had unexpected visitors.
Jasper’s parents.
I’d met them before-we weren’t strangers.
They’d always smiled to my face, but I knew they looked down on my background.
Now here they were, needing my help.
“Lexie, sweetheart, we’ve always been good to you, haven’t we?”
I smiled.
“Just tell me what you want.”
