He Locked Me in His GOLDEN CAGE, So I Locked Him Behind Iron Bars Chapter 07
Luke lay with his arms propped against the floor, thick lashes veiling the storm in his eyes.Â
I scrambled to his side, my white dress soaking upÂ
a dark stain of blood.Â
“Luke! Are you, are you okay?” My voice shook as I steadied him with one hand and reached for myÂ
phone to call an ambulance with the other.Â
Chloe stood up from the sofa with a sudden,Â
sharp motion. “Hailee? What are you doing here?Â
Where’s Julian?”Â
I looked up, my voice hoarse. “Are you insane?”Â
Chloe’s expression twisted. “That’s not all Luke’s blood. He got into a scrap with my security detail.”Â
I shifted my gaze. Sure enough, a few of her guards were nursing fresh wounds.Â
She paused, then a smile flickered back onto herÂ
face as she smoothed her hair.Â
“I just happened to mention that you were beingÂ
bullied here. He came running.”Â
“Poor Luke. So head–over–heels for you, and heÂ
doesn’t even know you’ve already been ruined byÂ
Julian.”Â
“I tried to talk sense into him, but he wouldn’tÂ
listen. What was I supposed to do?”Â
I held Luke, my throat too raw to even scream.Â
He had gashes on his forehead and elbows.Â
How did it come to this?Â
Maybe I should tell Luke everything. Tell him aboutÂ
my past life, tell him about my plan.Â
But the truth was too heavy, and there was tooÂ
much to explain. Plus, I selfishly didn’t want him toÂ
know just how wretched I was in that otherÂ
lifetime.Â
Luke lowered his gaze.Â
When he looked up, he leaned in and hugged meÂ
gently.Â
“Don’t cry, Hailee.”Â
Right then, the door was kicked open.Â
Julian Laurence stood there, his face dark as aÂ
thunderhead.Â
Before he could even speak, Chloe shrieked, “Can’tÂ
you keep your people on a leash? You let HaileeÂ
come here and ruin everything!”Â
Chloe clenched her fists.Â
The sight of us was only making her angrier.Â
She inhaled sharply. “Julian, look at them. CuddledÂ
up in this pathetic, tragic mess. It makes it look.Â
like I’m the villain tearing them apart!”Â
Julian leaned against the doorframe, watching usÂ
with icy detachment. “Isn’t that the truth?”Â
Luke coughed, then gave my back a calm,Â
soothing pat. “I’m okay. Don’t worry.”Â
That seemed to break the stalemate.Â
Julian reached out a hand toward me. “Hailee.Â
Come here.”Â
I didn’t move an inch.Â
Julian’s face hardened into a mask of gloom.Â
The ambulance arrived shortly after.Â
Outside the hospital room.Â
Chloe suppressed her agitation, turning herÂ
sarcasm on me. “Tell me, do you even have theÂ
money to pay these medical bills?”Â
I gave her a weary, dismissive glance.Â
Ignored, Chloe gritted her teeth. “Julian, are yourÂ
just going to let her act like this?”Â
Julian remained silent, his eyes fixed steadily onÂ
- me.Â
Chloe bit her lip, then leaned toward Julian. “Don’tÂ
give her a dime. If they can’t pay, I can finally…”Â
“Will you shut the hell up?” Julian flicked his gazeÂ
up, his tone impatient.Â
Chloe’s face drained of color. She muttered aÂ
curse and stomped off to find a doctor,Â
demanding an update on Luke.Â
The corridor, heavy with the scent of antiseptic,Â
fell silent.Â
Julian said softly, “Not going to ask me forÂ
money?”Â
I curled my lip. “Would you even give it to me?”Â
“I would,” Julian said. “You look like you’re ready toÂ
throw yourself into a grave if he dies.”Â
I shook my head, feeling a bone–deep exhaustion.Â
Another long silence followed.Â
“Hailee.” He lowered his eyes, his tone deceptively casual. “I’ve been having dreams lately.”Â
I snapped my head toward him. “Dreams aboutÂ
what?”Â
“In them, you’re very obedient,” Julian narrowed hisÂ
eyes. “Just a lot thinner than you are now, andÂ
you’re always crying.”Â
“It’s just a dream,” I said.Â
“Is it?” He looked at me, his thin lips parting. “Come here. Hug me.”Â
I took a step back, my rejection plain on my face.Â
Fortunately, he didn’t press the issue. Before heÂ
left, he slipped a card into my hand.Â
I rubbed the intricate patterns on the black creditÂ
card.Â
In my past life, Julian had given me this sameÂ
card.Â
But I didn’t use it to pay the bills.Â
I used my own money instead.Â
The lottery ticket I’d bought really did win-Â
500,000 dollars.
