Charging My Wife by the Hour Chapter 06
In an instant, all the color drained from Vivian’s face. “Vic is… no more?”
She reached out to steady herself against the wall before sliding all the way down to the floor. “How is that even possible? The surgery was clearly about to end…”
She began to tremble violently, and the items she took slipped from her grasp and crashed to the ground. It was a divorce certificate and a bankbook.
“What is this, Vincent? Is it our divorce certificate from last time?” Vivian reached out and tried to seize
- “I know I messed up. Please stop punishing me and let me see Vic… I stopped caring about Elliot a long time ago.
“I only did all of that because it felt like you only cared about money and didn’t give a damn about me. I
just wanted to get a rise out of you!”
“You did all of that to get a rise out of me?” I picked up the bankbook from the floor and hurled it at her
face. “You used my son’s life just to push my buttons? You’re a fucking monster, Vivian! This bankbook belongs to Vic.”
Forcing myself to suppress my trembling, I flipped it open and pointed at the transactions inside. “He wanted you to be there with him for his surgery, so he saved up for almost a year.”
Vivian’s eyes widened in utter disbelief as she stared at the records. From sums as large as fourteen hundred dollars to as small as five dollars, he recorded the rewards he received for helping out with
chores. Victor had personally taken every single cent to the bank and deposited it. He was just 250
dollars shy of hitting 14 grand.
“He even secretly sold off so many of his toys behind my back. The only one he kept was his favorite figurine, the one you bought for him. He couldn’t bear to part with it, but in the end, Eleanor broke its
arms and legs.
“Before his surgery, he handed me this bankbook and told me he hadn’t saved up enough rent. However, he hoped you could give him a discount and let him rent just one hour of your time, just so you’d wait outside until his surgery was over!”
The tears in my eyes ultimately spilled over. “But what did you do? Vivian, while Vic was waiting for you, you rented his doctors away; you don’t deserve to be his mother at all!”
Vivian collapsed limply onto the floor. She was utterly speechless for a long time. I picked up my bag and
left without a backward glance. The only reason I came back here was to pick up the divorce certificate
that had been mailed to this address.
An hour later, the audio recording of Elliot that I had sold to the media blew up on the trending list. The same outlets that had once reported on his sweet outings with Vivian completely changed their tune,
dedicating even larger front-page spreads to exposing Elliot’s true colors.
I imagined Elliot’s and Vivian’s phones must be going nuts now. I turned off my phone, put on sunglasses and a mask, and stepped into a private hospital.
After we remarried, aside from saving money for Victor, I also sponsored quite a few hospitals. My original intention was to earn blessings for Victor. I never expected that this act would end up saving his life.
When the ambulance was swarmed by the media, the doctors from the hospital swooped in through the emergency corridor and transferred Victor safely and quickly. They completed the surgery before his anesthesia wore off.
I used money to suppress all the media coverage and bought out all the surveillance footage that had captured us to guarantee Victor a peaceful, private environment to recover.
When the doctor saw me, he immediately came over. “Mr. Carrington, your son has already come to. It’s
just…”
“What is it?” I panicked all over again and rushed into the ward.
Victor was sitting quietly on the hospital bed. He broke into a smile when he saw me. “Daddy!”
His little hand was clammy as it clung tightly to my pinky. “Daddy, I’m telling you, I saw Mommy during the surgery; she kept telling me not to be afraid, to be strong and brave, and she said she’ll always watch
over us!”
I was rooted to the spot.
