Died For Their Vows, Back For My Revenge Chapter 05
Nolan scooped me up and ran.Â
My parents stood frozen, staring at the blood.Â
“She was pregnant? Why didn’t she tell us!”Â
My father’s face went ugly. Then he snorted. “This isn’t on us. She screwed up first. And we weren’t the ones hitting her.”Â
is!”Â
“Enough. Just go! We need to see how bad itÂ
My mother cut him off and dragged himÂ
toward the hospital.Â
Outside the operating room, Nolan staredÂ
down at his hands. Covered in my blood. HeÂ
looked like his soul had left his body.Â
My father paced for a while. Then his voiceÂ
pitched with anxiety. “What about Tessa? We stillÂ
don’t know where she is.”Â
My mother glanced at Nolan, who hadn’t saidÂ
a word. She clenched her jaw. “If it comes down toÂ
it, we call the cops. We can’t just let Tessa stayÂ
missing.”Â
Tessa. Tessa. Tessa.Â
Nolan stared at his in–laws. That name wasÂ
the only thing coming out of their mouths.Â
And before, his own head and heart had beenÂ
full of nothing but Tessa Hayes.Â
“Call the cops,” he said. “I’m staying here untilÂ
Lydia wakes up.”Â
My parents exchanged a look. Then theyÂ
made the call.Â
off.Â
Not long after, the operating room lights shutÂ
The doctors wheeled me out. Nolan shot toÂ
his feet.Â
“Doctor. How is my wife…”Â
The doctor shook his head. “We couldn’t saveÂ
the baby. The mother needs substantial recoveryÂ
time. But…”Â
Hesitation crossed the doctor’s face. “TheÂ
patient has facial injuries and bruising across her body. This is consistent with physical assault. WeÂ
recommend involving the police.”Â
“No. Don’t. That won’t be necessary.”Â
Nolan’s voice was barely a whisper. WalkingÂ
beside my bed, he slapped himself across theÂ
face. Hard.Â
It didn’t matter what the circumstances were.Â
You don’t lay hands on your wife. Ever.Â
My mother looked at me for a few seconds and sighed. She turned to Nolan. “She’ll be fine.Â
When she wakes up, you two can talk it out. SheÂ
was in the wrong to begin with. You can’t fullyÂ
blame yourself.”Â
“Besides, Lydia’s always been forgiving. She’sÂ
a good kid. She definitely won’t…”Â
A phone buzzed. My mother’s voice cut off.Â
It was the police station.Â
“Ma’am, Tessa Hayes has been located. She wasn’t kidnapped. Turns out her friends were just messing around with her. Please verify the facts before you file a report next time.”Â
The call ended. The silence that followed wasÂ
absolute. You could’ve heard a pin drop.Â
Nolan’s face went gray. He finally understoodÂ
the full, staggering depth of his stupidity.Â
My father’s brows knitted together. HeÂ
coughed twice. “That girl. She really knows how to cause trouble. Nolan, don’t worry. When we getÂ
home, we’ll give her a proper talking–to.”Â
My mother jumped in immediately. “Yes. Absolutely. We’ll ground her for a good long while. Once her sister is better, we’ll bring her here so sheÂ
can apologize to Lydia in person.”Â
Every word out of their mouths was a shield. around Tessa. They didn’t want a single scratchÂ
on her.Â
Not a single thought spared for me, lyingÂ
broken in a hospital bed.Â
But before my parents could leave, the doorÂ
slammed open.Â
Tessa waltzed in, an apology already pastedÂ
on her face.Â
She stuck out her tongue. Glanced at me.Â
“Yikes. You look really bad.”Â
