My Husband Bought Her Snacks But Not My Mom A Ticket Chapter 06
I stretched lazily. Life was pretty good now.Â
No cooking. No laundry. Someone taking careÂ
of me.Â
And most importantly–no strangers bargingÂ
in and telling us to get out.Â
On my way to work, Gavin called again.Â
I was driving, so I didn’t pick up.Â
But when I parked at the office, he was waiting for me at the gate.Â
I checked my watch. Annoying. “I’m about toÂ
be late.”Â
“Are you working?”Â
He blinked, then let go of my wrist. Didn’t answer my question. Just said quietly, “I’ll waitÂ
outside. Let’s have lunch together.”Â
“Okay.”Â
So he waited four more hours.Â
At the restaurant, he just stared at me.Â
It was hard to tell if he was being sarcastic orÂ
genuine. Then he said, “You look pretty good.”Â
I nodded. “Yeah.”Â
At least I wasn’t fighting anymore. Sleeping better too.Â
Six months ago, I couldn’t have imagined a life like this.Â
“When are you coming home?”Â
My brow furrowed. But before I could speak, Gavin added, “Brenda won’t be coming back. IÂ
found her a place these last few days. Amber’s allÂ
settled too.”Â
I understood. He wouldn’t have come lookingÂ
for me until they were taken care of.Â
But he could’ve done it so fast. Yet he let meÂ
suffer for months.Â
When I didn’t respond, Gavin assumed IÂ
agreed.Â
He smiled, tired and almost pitiful. Suddenly grabbed my hand.Â
“You’ve been so moody lately, running away from home. I don’t know what to do with youÂ
anymore.”Â
“Let’s get a divorce.”Â
Pain shot through my palm. His nails dug in.Â
His pupils shrank. “Why?”Â
“Because I don’t want to live like thisÂ
anymore.”Â
He seemed to know what I meant. Panic creptÂ
into his voice. “There’s nothing going on betweenÂ
me and Amber. She’s like a sister to me.”Â
“The only reason I take care of Brenda isÂ
because…”Â
His face twisted.Â
“Because I grew up without a mom. My dadÂ
didn’t give a damn about me. Brenda was the oneÂ
who brought me food all the time.”Â
“She practically treated me like a son.”Â
“Back then, she wanted me to marry Amber.Â
But then I met you… So I’ve always felt guilty.“,Â
He squeezed my hand tighter. “You have toÂ
believe me. Amber and I are nothing.”Â
I pulled my hand back. My voice stayed calm. “That doesn’t matter anymore.”Â
“Yes, it does!”Â
“Just tell me. What’s really bothering you?”Â
His phone rang. Amber’s special ringtone.Â
He hesitated. Then answered.Â
I don’t know what she said, but his face wentÂ
dark. “Right now?”Â
A sob came through the speaker. Small andÂ
pitiful.Â
Gavin shot to his feet. “Okay. Wait for me.”Â
He hung up, looked at me for two seconds, and forced out the words: “She got into a carÂ
accident… I…”Â
“Okay. Go.”Â
I didn’t argue.Â
I stood up to leave. Gavin panicked andÂ
grabbed my arm.Â
“You don’t want me to go, do you? I don’t haveÂ
a choice. She doesn’t know anyone else in thisÂ
city. I can’t just leave her.”Â
He’d said this so many times.Â
On our anniversaries. On my birthdays. On all the nights I actually needed him.Â
But I’d already figured it out. You can’t wake someone who’s pretending to be asleep.Â
“Tomorrow morning. County Clerk’s Office.”Â
His face flickered with conflict, like he was genuinely worried about Amber.Â
“Don’t overthink this. I’ll explain everythingÂ
when I get back.”Â
Then he left without looking back.Â
After he was gone, I sat back down andÂ
slowly finished the dessert I hadn’t touched.Â
Without him around, my appetite wasÂ
definitely better.Â
After work, I went home like always. My mom had made a whole table of food. All my favorites.Â
I was starving. Reached for the food withoutÂ
washing my hands.Â
She snatched the fork away and shoved meÂ
toward the bathroom. “You dirty girl! Wash yourÂ
hands first!”Â
I giggled and did what she said.Â
But after dinner, I saw her packed suitcase.Â
She noticed me looking and explained with aÂ
smile, “I kinda left in a hurry this time. I’ve got chickens and a dog back home. They’ll starve if IÂ
don’t get back.”Â
My chest ached again. I opened my mouth,Â
but she kept going.Â
“I get it. From now on, whenever I miss you, I’ll come stay for a while. This is my daughter’sÂ
house. I can do whatever I want.”Â
She said it softly, but her voice was steady.Â
I relaxed and pulled her into a hug.Â
That night, we slept in the same bed. SheÂ
talked to me for hours.Â
But she never mentioned Gavin.
