Guests gasped. Admiration, not horror. 

Gael stood at the altar. Looking at my soul. 

“You look,” he choked up, “like victory.” 

The vows were spoken. 

“Do you, Ember, accept Gael?” 

“I do.” 

“Mark your bride.” 

The final step. 

Gael leaned down. He brushed my hair aside. 

“Ready?” 

“Mark me.” 

He bit down. 

Explosion of light. 

Mine! 

Yours! 

The bond snapped into place. Golden chain. Unbreakable. 

I was whole. 

Julian POV: 

The nursing home common room smelled of bleach. 

I sat in my wheelchair in the corner. Ignored. 

The orderly had left the TV on WNN. The remote was out of reach. 

Livestream. 

Ember. Walking down the aisle. 

Her back… showing the scars. The scars I gave her. 

Comments scrolled.

Then Gael. Looking at her with hunger. 

He leaned down. Sank his teeth into her neck. 

“NO!” I screamed. 

My voice was weak. 

“Turn it off!” I begged. “Please!” 

Nobody listened. The nurse was on her phone. Other 

patients were asleep. 

I watched him mark her. 

She was his. Eternally. 

I was forced to watch my own failure in high definition. 

I screamed until my voice gave out. Just a ghost howling 

at a screen.
