He Came Knocking with a Baby in Tow Chapter 10
Three months later, Lucas and I had our weddingÂ
in London.Â
This time, it wasn’t a fake one–it was a realÂ
wedding.Â
There was a wedding dress, guests, rings, vows.Â
Echo was our flower boy, in a little suit, walkingÂ
down the red carpet all serious.Â
After the wedding, the three of us went to theÂ
Maldives for our honeymoon.Â
Echo was building a sandcastle on the beach.Â
Lucas hugged me from behind, his chin on myÂ
shoulder.Â
“Eva, thank you for giving me another chance.”Â
I leaned into his arms and looked at the horizon:Â
“Thank you for never giving up.”Â
“And thank Echo. If it wasn’t for him, we mightÂ
never have seen each other again.”Â
Lucas smiled: “That kid, he really was our hero.”Â
“We have to be good to him from now on.”Â
“Yeah,” I said, “and we’re gonna have a little sisterÂ
for him.”Â
Lucas froze for a second, then smiled like an idiot:Â
“Really?”Â
“Really,” I turned and looked into his eyes. “Echo’sÂ
always wanted a sister.”Â
Lucas held me tight and spun me around underÂ
the sunset.Â
Echo saw us, dropped his shovel, and ran over.Â
“Dad, Mommy, what are you playing? I wanna playÂ
too.”Â
Lucas picked him up and lifted him over his head.Â
“We’re playing the ‘lift you up high‘ game.”Â
Echo giggled, his little face full of happiness.Â
I looked at the father and son, my heart full ofÂ
peace.Â
This was the life I wanted.Â
Someone to love, a kid, sun, sea.Â
No crazy drama, no life–or–death schemes, just theÂ
quiet, steady normalcy of everyday life.Â
Lucas put me down, one arm holding Echo, oneÂ
hand holding mine.Â
“Eva, I love you.”Â
“I love you too,” I said, “and Echo.”Â
Echo wrapped his arms around our necks andÂ
said in that soft little kid voice: “Echo loves youÂ
too, Mommy, and Dad.”Â
The sunset stretched our shadows long, long.Â
This time, we’d never be apart again.
