From Fat Girl to Fated Mate Chapter 07
It was obvious Ethan was talking to me.Â
I remembered that photo on his phone.Â
So he really hadn’t recognized me.Â
Jessica hadn’t expected him to talk to me at all.Â
But she recovered fast, plastering on a sweetÂ
smile. “Don’t you remember? She’s that fat pigÂ
who was stalking you.”Â
Ethan frowned slightly, clearly annoyed. “That’sÂ
not what I meant.”Â
Of course he knew I was the girl he’d humiliated outside the principal’s office. But something aboutÂ
me now felt strangely familiar to him.Â
After a moment, he shook his head. “You lost a lotÂ
of weight.”Â
This was the second time he’d spoken directly toÂ
- me.Â
“Yeah,” I said softly.Â
The weird tension between us earned me a dirtyÂ
look from Jessica.Â
Just then, the host announced our names. WeÂ
rushed out.Â
The lights went dark. We took our positions.Â
I stood at the far right of the stage, completelyÂ
outside the spotlight.Â
Jessica, in her short skirt showing off her longÂ
legs, stood at center stage, beaming. The moment.Â
she appeared, the audience erupted in thunderousÂ
cheers.Â
I was trembling slightly.Â
It had been three full years since I’d last been on aÂ
stage. I used to be the Swan Princess, the mostÂ
dazzling presence under the lights. But the pastÂ
few years had ground all my pride into dust.Â
I thought I’d never have the courage to return.Â
The next second, the deafening music crashed inÂ
and knocked away all my extra thoughts. In anÂ
instant, every muscle in my body remembered.Â
Seven years of training, choreography, expression,Â
control, all of it was still deep inside me, etchedÂ
into my bones,Â
Even though I’d only practiced this routine for two months, my movements were smoother and moreÂ
precise than anyone else’s.Â
The crowd seemed to disappear.Â
I got lost in the music and the lights, forgettingÂ
everything. The whispers, the cruel mockery, the heavy weight of those years.Â
I waved my arms, I danced. Nothing else matteredÂ
anymore.Â
“Who is she?”Â
“This can’t be real.”Â
Whispers came from the audience.Â
Then the judges‘ voices. When the first chorus hit, every single one of them had their eyes locked onÂ
- me.Â
“That girl. Her movements are like water. She’s not just dancing, she is the music.”Â
“She’s clearly had professional training.”Â
“Incredible talent!”Â
Even the classmates who’d made fun of me heldÂ
their breath. They didn’t want to admit it, but theyÂ
couldn’t look away.Â
When they finally snapped out of it, half of them were silently cursing themselves.Â
Did they really just get impressed by that fat pig?Â
Then they looked around and saw that studentsÂ
from other classes were just as mesmerized.Â
Relief. Okay, so it wasn’t just them.Â
“Josie is actually… really good.”Â
“She dances like a completely different person. It’sÂ
almost… scary how good she is.”Â
“Maybe she was never really a pig. Maybe she wasÂ
just… curvy? Oh my God, is my taste broken?”Â
Backstage, Ethan’s hands were clenched into fists,Â
the suspicion in his eyes deepening as he staredÂ
at the stage without a word.Â
The dance ended.Â
I held my final pose as my thoughts drifted back to reality. Thundering applause washed over me. The judges, the students. Everyone was looking at me with intense approval.Â
I took a bow.Â
Because I was at the edge of the stage, JessicaÂ
hadn’t noticed me during the performance.Â
When the results came in, our grade had won firstÂ
place.Â
Our class went absolutely wild with celebration.Â
Before the awards ceremony, they shoved me back into my seat. “You didn’t drag us down this time, but you’re not going up there. You’ll ruin theÂ
photo.”Â
“That’s right. Us winning had nothing to do withÂ
you.”Â
I didn’t argue. I didn’t care about the trophyÂ
anyway.Â
A few minutes later, a volunteer ran over. “Who’sÂ
Josie?”Â
I raised my hand.Â
“Hurry. We can’t give out the award without you!”Â
Confused, I followed her to the backstage area.Â
The dance coach and a few judges were waitingÂ
there.Â
I walked over, and they looked me up and down.Â
Then they smiled.Â
“You’re Josie, right? We just watched yourÂ
performance. Your movement is incrediblyÂ
expressive. We want to offer you the position ofÂ
head cheerleader for the Blackwood pack.”Â
The room went dead silent.Â
The team members stared at the coach like she’dÂ
just spoken Latin.Â
Jessica was the first to recover. “Ma’am, you’veÂ
got it wrong. She’s so fat, how could she beÂ
captain?”Â
The coach patted my shoulder. “No, I don’t. EvenÂ
though she’s a bit curvy, her movements areÂ
lighter than anyone else’s here.”Â
Jessica’s face darkened in an instant.Â
The decision was made quickly. I thanked them all. The moment the judges left, the squadÂ
immediately surrounded me.Â
“What did you do?”Â
“Have you been secretly practicing this wholeÂ
time? Just to embarrass me?”Â
Now that I had backing, I looked Jessica straightÂ
in the eyes. “Don’t forget our bet.”Â
Her face twisted with rage. “Apologize to you?Â
Dream on. You’re insane.”Â
She signaled to the others. “Hold her down. Tear her clothes off. Once those photos get out, let’s see how fast the school expels her!”Â
I grabbed the front of my uniform. “No. You can’tÂ
do this!”Â
“We can do whatever we want!”Â
As they closed in, I backed away.Â
Bang. I hit a solid wall.Â
An ice–cold voice cut through the air. “What do youÂ
think you’re doing?”
