They Tried to Break My Sister. Then I Woke Up Chapter 06
“Audrey, don’t do anything crazy! I’m carrying Gavin’s son. He’s the Blackwell family’s next male
heir!”
Paige pressed herself against the door, both hands clamped protectively over her stomach.
I ignored her and merely glanced at Scar.
Scar grinned and whistled toward the entrance.
The next second, two Eastside Rogues tossed a skinny middle–aged man into the center of
Founders‘ Hall.
Curtis Pike.
For the past five years, he’d secretly run an underground clinic on the edge of Blackridge territory,
supplying drugs to werewolves who didn’t want anything showing up in their official medical
records.
Scar stood over him with a cigarette between his lips.
“Curtis, you know exactly what kind of business you’ve been running out of that underground
-clinic.”
“So clear this up. Right here, in front of the Pack Council and everyone else.”
Curtis dropped to his knees and bowed repeatedly, his forehead nearly hitting the floor.
“I’ll talk! I’ll tell you everything!”
He hurriedly pointed at Diane, who was sprawled nearby, then at Paige.
“It was them!”
“Last month, Diane paid me two thousand dollars to prepare a batch of highly concentrated wolfsbane mixed with a banned drug that induces uterine contractions!”
The entire hall went silent.
Curtis pointed at Paige next.
“She was there too!”
“She said that as long as Audrey lost the female pup, she’d pay me another three thousand afterward!”
With shaking hands, he pulled half of a crumpled receipt from inside his clothes.
“This is the receipt for the deposit Diane paid. Her signature and fingerprint are both on it!”
The moment he finished, Founders‘ Hall erupted.
Walter raised a trembling hand and pointed at Diane.
“You… you actually bought banned drugs to kill an unborn pup?!”
Diane panicked and scrambled toward Curtis.
“You’re lying!”
“You lying quack! Did Audrey pay you to frame me?
Paige kept backing away, shrieking her denial.
“It had nothing to do with me! He’s lying! I didn’t do anything!”
“Shut up.”
My voice was ice–cold.
Scar turned and carried in a large earthenware pot from outside, the black liquid inside still
steaming.
The bitter, acrid smell quickly filled Founders‘ Hall.
I knew that smell all too well.
The scent of wolfsbane was unmistakable.
I looked down at Diane.
“Didn’t you bring me a bowl of this every day and tell me it was the Blackwell family’s special
prenatal tonic? That it would protect the pup and strengthen the pup’s Alpha blood?”
I nudged the ceramic bowl on the floor with my foot.
“If it’s so good, then you and Paige can finish the whole pot today”
Scar slowly drew the wide–bladed hunting knife at his waist and tapped the flat of the blade
against his palm
“Smack
“Smack”
Diane stared at the steaming pot of black tonic, and all the color drained from her face.
Then she spun around, lunged at Paige, grabbed her by the hair, and dragged her toward the pot.
“This was all your idea, you home–wrecker!”
Her face twisted with rage as she seized a ceramic spoon, scooped up some of the black liquid,
and tried to force it into Paige’s mouth.
“Drink it!”
“Drink all of it!”
“My son ended up like this because of you!”
“You crazy old woman! Let go of me!”
Paige screamed and fought back, clamping both hands around Diane’s throat.
The two women began wrestling across the floor, rolling through broken glass and rubble as they
clawed at each other.
In the middle of the struggle, Diane kicked Paige hard in the stomach.
Paige grunted and fell backward.
As she hit the floor, a yellowed silicone fake belly slipped out from beneath her clothes.
“Smack.”
It landed in the center of Founders‘ Hall.
The entire room fell dead silent.
The instant Curtis saw the fake belly, he hurried to explain.
“She’s not pregnant at all!”
“Two years ago, she had two terminations at my clinic. After that, she was left unable to conceive.”
He pointed urgently at the silicone belly.
“She faked the pregnancy because she wanted a share of the Pack territory redevelopment
compensation!”
“As long as everyone believed she was carrying Gavin’s male heir, she could claim an extra share as
the mother of the future Alpha heir!”
Gavin, still sprawled beside the Alpha memorial with his face swollen and bruised, looked as if he’d
been struck by lightning.
He stared at the silicone belly on the floor, his eyes widening.
“Fake…?”
He looked sharply at Paige.
“You’ve been lying to me this whole time?!”
The next second, Gavin completely lost it.
“Paige!”
“I took eighty thousand dollars from the Founders‘ Hall Restoration Fund for you!”
He pointed at the fake belly on the floor, his voice nearly breaking from shouting.
“And you can’t even conceive a pup? You strapped on a fake belly and told me you were carrying
the Blackwell family’s male heir?!”
Paige clutched her torn clothes around herself and collapsed on the floor, sobbing and shouting.
This time, no one defended her.
Dozens of Blackwell elders stared at the fake belly, then at Gavin, and the last traces of favoritism
vanished from their eyes.
They hadn’t just been cheated out of the Pack restoration fund.
Even Gavin’s supposed next Alpha heir had been a lie from the very beginning.
Fury swept through Founders‘ Hall.
Several Pack Elders immediately ordered Pack discipline.
Gavin, who had just been protected as the Alpha Heir, and Paige, who had been treated as the
mother of the future male heir, were suddenly the ones facing Blackridge’s Pack discipline.
I stood in the middle of the chaos.
A strong downward pull suddenly seized my lower abdomen.
The next second, warmth ran down the inside of my thigh.
My expression changed, and I immediately turned toward Scar.
“Scar, get the car. Now.”
Scar had barely taken a step toward me when Malcolm thrust his cane across his path.
“Stop!”
Malcolm pointed at Gavin, who was still sprawled on the floor, his expression dark.
“Every cent of that eighty thousand dollars from the Founders‘ Hall Restoration Fund has to be
repaid!”
“That money was meant to restore Founders‘ Hall and the memorial grounds honoring our past
Alphas.”
He struck his cane against the floor.
“If the money can’t be recovered, then we’ll take your house in the city instead!”
More than a dozen Blackwell men immediately closed in.
Some were still carrying shovels and tools they’d brought in from outside, surrounding Gavin, me,
and the path to the exit.
Diane crawled over and clung desperately to Gavin’s pant leg.
“Gavin! Save me!”
“Give them the house! Pay back the Pack first!”
Her voice broke as she cried.
“I don’t want the police taking me away for drugging a pregnant she–wolf! I don’t want to go to
prison!”
“Get off me!”
Gavin kicked her away.
His eyes were bloodshot as he pointed at his mother and screamed
“If you hadn’t spent every day pressuring me for a male heir, going on and on about how the
Blackwell Alpha bloodline couldn’t end, would I be this mess now?”
“You’re the one who insisted Audrey had to get rid of that female pup!”
“You’re the one who bought the wolfsbane and those banned drugs and forced her to drink bowl
after bowl!”
The more Gavin spoke, the more hysterical he became.
“Now everything’s come out, and you still expect me to clean up your mess?”
“This is all your fault!”
Diane went completely still.
She collapsed on the floor, one hand pressed to her face, trembling as she stared at the son she’d
protected all his life.
Several younger men from the extended Blackwell family stepped forward and twisted Gavin’s
arms behind his back.
“Enough bullshit! Hand over the deed to the house!
Gavin suddenly dropped to his knees on the stone floor of Founders‘ Hall and bowed three times,
striking his forehead against the stone each time.
“I’ll give it to you! I’ll give you everything!”
Then he raised one hand and pointed toward the far end of the hall, where relics and memorial
plaques belonging to generations of Alphas were displayed.
“The deed to the house and the rest of the bank documents are hidden in a secret compartment
behind the Alpha memorial plaques!”
get them right now!”
The Blackwell men exchanged looks before finally releasing him.
Gavin immediately scrambled up the steps behind the Alpha memorial and backed toward the
massive carved wooden screen.
I stayed where I was, but the cramps in my lower abdomen were coming closer and closer
together, barely giving me time to breathe.
Then I saw Gavin grab a rusted iron control lever in the corner.
He looked back at me.
His mouth twisted into a vicious smile.
Then he yanked the lever down with all his strength
“BOOM!”
