Seeing his chance to move up slip away once again, Liam glared at me with resentment, but his words remained agreeable. “That’s right, Flynn. Megan just looked after me for one night because she’s kind. Don’t get the wrong idea.”
Back when I was working on a project, I had attended nine business dinners in just three days and ended up in the hospital for a bleeding ulcer. Megan claimed she was too busy with work and never came to see me once.
Now, when Liam had a questionable case of stomach trouble, she was worried enough to spend the entire night by his side.
The fact that they were of the opposite sex and spending the night alone together didn’t seem to bother her in the slightest.
It was clearly just a difference of who mattered to her and who didn’t.
Even though she said that she wouldn’t divorce me, I knew that it wasn’t because of love.
For ten years, I had devoted myself entirely to her.
Wherever she needed something, I was always the first to provide it.
She was used to my unconditional devotion.
That was why she could not accept the idea of me breaking free from her control.
I thought for a moment and was about to speak when the door beside us suddenly opened.
The person who stepped out was none other than the chairman of our parent company, Sam Davis. Behind him was the client, Alan Hayes, who had come to discuss the partnership with him.
Megan froze for a moment but recovered quickly. “Mr. Davis, when did you get here? Why didn’t you let me know? I would’ve arranged a proper welcome for you.”
Liam hurriedly chimed in. “It’s almost lunchtime. If you don’t mind, why don’t we take you out for lunch, Mr. Davis?”
Sam glanced at them and said flatly, “With something so serious happening at one of our branches, how could I be in the mood for lunch?”
With one sentence, he made it clear why he had come.
Cold sweat immediately broke out across Megan’s forehead.
She had held that press conference specifically to throw me under the bus and bury the scandal early.
She never expected it to attract the chairman’s attention anyway.
Liam’s eyes darted around before he suddenly spoke. “Mr. Davis, you might not know this yet, but Flynn was the one responsible for the financial fraud!”
Megan gave me an apologetic look and immediately backed Liam up. “Mr. Davis, it was my failure as well. I should have discovered sooner that Flynn had been misappropriating company funds and falsifying our accounts. But don’t worry, I’ve already fired him.”
Sam turned to me and asked, “Flynn, is that true?”
For some reason, Megan’s heart suddenly lurched. She instinctively looked at me.
“Ms. Grant is right, sir,” I responded with a smile. “I’m no longer an employee of the company.”
Megan did not expect me to admit it so readily. She froze, and her expression became complicated.
However, before she could feel relieved…
I pulled out a USB drive from my pocket and continued, “However, the person who misappropriated company funds and falsified the accounts wasn’t me.
“It was Liam Johnson.”
