“Serena!” Adrian’s voice rang through the lobby.
He rushed over and gathered her into his arms. Before I could speak, a slap snapped my face sideways.
My mother stood there, breathing hard and pointing at me with red eyes. “How could you be this vicious?
“Serena is newly pregnant, and the pregnancy is still fragile.”
“You followed her to the hospital because you couldn’t wait to kill her and the baby?”
The words struck like a blow. “She’s pregnant?”
“Stop pretending,” Adrian said coldly. “That’s why you came here, isn’t it?”
I could not answer.
My mother gave a humorless laugh. “I hid it because I knew you would lose control, yet you still found out.”
“Do you think hiding it would keep me from falling apart?” I finally shouted.
“Mom, I’m your daughter. Why are you doing this to me?”
Unexpectedly, Serena moved in front of my mother. “I’m the one who hurt you.
“If you need to hate someone, hate me.”
“I’ve asked Diane to be my son’s godmother. I won’t let you attack her.”
“Godmother?” My voice quivered.
My mother stared at me without explaining.
“Mom, tell me…”
Someone shoved me hard. I hit the floor and looked up at Adrian, who stood over me with one arm guarding Serena.
The scene drew every eye in the lobby.
My hair had come loose, my cheek burned from the slap, and Adrian remained planted between me and Serena as if I were the only threat there.
“That’s the CEO’s unstable wife,” a woman whispered. “She started a scene right here in the hospital.”
“Look at her. No wonder he doesn’t want her anymore.”
“He doesn’t even love her, but he stays married so she won’t do something drastic. Imagine having to live like that.”
“Her poor mother, too. What an ungrateful daughter.”
“Stop,” I whispered, backing away. “Please stop.”
Their words seemed to take physical form, piercing every inch of me. I felt myself slipping into another episode.
I covered my head. Then a hand closed gently around my wrist.
