“Don’t worry. You’re still the one I like the most.”
I jumped to my feet, replayed the recording, then laughed and cried at the same time. all felt so absurd.
So, everything Jenna had so carefully planned was nothing but a lie.
By then, I was already exhausted.
People who make mistakes should face the consequences. From the moment Jenna chose to betray me, I stopped interfering in anything that followed.
I forced myself to let go for over three days. This final ‘gift’ just arrived late,
Watching Jenna leave in a hurry, my friend looked at me and gave me a thumbs-up.
“Honestly, you’re impressive. Be real with me. Do you have even a tiny thought of getting back together with her? I’d hate it if you turned out to be one of those hopeless romantics.”
I shook my head and answered without hesitation. “I have no intention of getting back together with her. None at all.”
By my count, after the wedding fiasco, Henry was bound to make a move soon.
It was destined to end in mutual destruction.
Within just three days, even from Hailborough City, I heard about the chaos unfolding around Jenna.
They said that after she got back and saw the USB drive, she smashed everything on her office desk.
But it was already too late. Investigators had arrived with evidence in hand.
Jenna urgently handed the data from her computer to someone she trusted. Combined with the video I provided, Henry was dragged down as well.
New and old grudges piled up. All the illegal dealings were exposed at once.
Ironically, because I had warned Jenna again and again in the past, her offenses were the least severe.
Soon, everyone involved was sentenced. Jenna received a two-year suspended sentence.
However, she was just confined to the place she lived. Leaving the city required formal approval.
Since I had already blocked her, I enjoyed a long stretch of peace and quiet.
I didn’t expect to run into my former senior in Hailborough City.
“Long time no see. You stood out in the competition.”
She had been invited as a special judge and stopped me after the event ended.
“You didn’t give me extra points out of nostalgia, did you?” I joked.
To my surprise, she stopped smiling and looked at me seriously.
“No. The judging was fair. Don’t worry. I actually wanted to talk to you about something else. Do you remember that design competition you withdrew from a few years ago?”
I froze for a moment. I did remember.
Back then, I was preparing for a major design contest when another contestant approached me with money and asked me to
withdraw
I didn’t want it. It felt like an insult to my work and to myself.
But at the time, Jenna’s company was facing a cash-flow crisis and urgently needed funds to survive.
So, for Jenna, I agreed.
It had been a long time ago.
Unease slowly crept in. It grew stronger, but I cautiously tried to brush it off.
“I did withdraw, but I never competed. That shouldn’t be a problem, right?”
She shook her head after sensing my tension and spoke gently.
“Don’t be scared. I came here to apologize.
“My younger sister also competed that year. She showed me the list of participants, and I casually mentioned that you were talented and that you had real potential.
“I never imagined she’d take that as encouragement to approach you, pay you off, and force you to withdraw. I know how humiliating that is in our field, and I’m truly sorry.
“I wanted to look for you back then, but I couldn’t get your updated contact information. I didn’t expect to meet you today. I’m really sorry.”
My heart clenched. A thousand thoughts surged through my mind.
For a moment, I wondered if I had misheard her.
But almost immediately, confusion turned into something else. When I heard the word sorry, I suddenly felt wronged.
I tried to smile, but could only watch as my tears fell onto the back of my hand.
