He Married His Enemy’s Daughter, So I Left the Mafia Family Chapter 06

The rain kept getting heavier.

When Adrian reached the memorial section where Daniel Carter’s ashes had been kept, he stopped

dead.

The niche that had held Daniel Carter’s ashes was empty.

Even the memorial plaque had been removed.

All that remained was the freshly cleaned stone niche.

A staff member nearby was putting away some tools.

Adrian grabbed him by the arm.

“Where’s Daniel? Where are his ashes?”

The man jumped at his sudden approach.

“They were moved around noon. His daughter came in with all the paperwork.”

“Where to?”

“That’s private. She only said she was taking her father somewhere a long way away. She probably won’t be back.”

Adrian stood there in the rain without saying a word.

Natalie was gone.

She hadn’t left in a fit of anger.

She wasn’t waiting for him to chase after her and coax her back.

She had taken her father with her, left the ring behind, and hadn’t even told him about the baby.

She had truly disappeared from the Moretti Family.

Only then did Adrian finally understand.

For the past five years, Natalie hadn’t stayed because she had nowhere else to go.

She had simply kept choosing to stay.

Adrian stood in front of the empty memorial for a long time.

Then one name suddenly came to mind.

Victor Marino.

Daniel’s most trusted old friend, and a consigliere who could still speak directly to the Commission.

By the time Adrian reached the Rookery Building, he was soaked through.

Moretti Security had an entire floor of offices there.

Victor was already inside waiting for him.

Adrian pushed open the door.

“Uncle Victor, has Natalie been here? Where’s she gone?”

Victor turned around.

There wasn’t a trace of his usual politeness in his eyes.

“And what makes you think you’ve got the right to ask about her now?”

Adrian’s breath caught.

“She’s pregnant. Rossi men attacked the compound. She could be hurt. I need to find her.”

Victor stared at him, his voice completely cold.

“So now you’re worried she might get hurt? What about all those years before? Did you not see how people treated her? She couldn’t even sit with the Family’s inner circle at dinner because her name was Carter. They pushed her out of operational meetings. Even the lowest-ranking men under you ordered her about like hired help. Did you ever once stand up for her?”

Adrian’s face went pale.

Victor kept going.

“Daniel saved the Don’s life. He saved yours too. But because he wasn’t Italian, he never got to be anything more than the Family’s head of external security. Natalie went into some of the most dangerous operations at your side, and you still treated her the same way. The Rossi girl did nothing, but because her father was a Don, you all decided she belonged in the inner circle more than Natalie ever could.”

Adrian spoke quietly.

“I didn’t…”

“You did.”

Victor cut him off without hesitation.

“No one hurt her more than you did.”

Adrian remained silent for a long time before finally speaking, his voice hoarse.

“Then at least tell me what she’s actually been doing all these years.”

Victor looked at him.

“You honestly thought she’d spent the last five years doing nothing but paperwork at Moretti

Security?”

Adrian’s head snapped up.

“What do you mean?”

“She never walked away from what Daniel started. Officially, she left field operations. In reality, she’s been working for me undercover this whole time. Those Rossi routes, accounts and contacts? She tracked down more than half of them herself, one by one.”

Only then did Adrian realize how much he had ignored.

Over the years, Natalie often came home with injuries.

Sometimes bruises covered her arms.

Sometimes there were cuts across her back.

He had never seriously asked where they came from.

He had even mocked her.

“What the hell have you been up to this time?”

But all along, she had been finishing the work they had started together years ago.

And all that time, he’d treated her like a problem just to keep Selena comfortable.

Adrian stood there in silence for a long time.

Then, in front of Victor, he dropped to his knees.

was wrong. Just tell me where she is. I’ll find her. I’ll bring her back.”

Victor stared at him for a long moment.

“She left a message before she went.”

Adrian looked up.

“She said that from today on, she has nothing to do with the Moretti Family.”

Victor paused.

“And nothing to do with you.”

He walked to the door and pulled it open.

“Go home. Stop looking for her. You’ve treated her like an outsider for years. Now accept that she

really has nothing to do with you.”
