A Ghost Stands Between Me And The Mafia Boss I Love Chapter 06
On the day I was discharged, Lorenzo insisted on taking me back to the Vitale seaside estate.
He told me this was “our home.”
But to me, it only felt like an expensive, cold model home. There were only three colors-black, white, and gray.
Everything was arranged just so, but there was no warmth of a home.
I stood in the middle of the living room.
Lorenzo put the luggage in the bedroom, then brought me a glass of warm milk.
“Drink some of this. Then go rest.”
His voice was soft, like he was trying to prove we had once been close.
I didn’t take it. My voice came out confused and guarded.
“I want to see some things from before.”
Lorenzo’s body visibly stiffened.
“Those aren’t important.”
He set the glass aside. “The doctor said what you need most right now is rest. You can think about
the past later.”
He was afraid.
I couldn’t say exactly what he was afraid of, but I could feel it.
I turned and walked into the study, locking the door behind me.
Lorenzo immediately knocked.
“Celeste.”
“Open the door.”
I ignored him.
My instincts told me there had to be something in this room.
I started going through the drawers.
In the bottom cabinet, hidden away, was a locked metal box. The key was pressed under a folder.
After I opened it, the first thing on top was a stack of diagnostic records.
[Severe depressive state, accompanied by severe hallucinations and trauma responses.]
The dates started six months ago. Every follow-up noted that the condition had worsened.
Underneath there was a black notebook.
The first page was in my handwriting.
[Today, he brought home pistachio desserts from Ferrara. I’m actually allergic to pistachios. The person who likes these is Bianca.]
[I saw Valeria in Brooklyn. She isn’t dead at all. What actually died was the last bit of trust I had in
this family.]
[He said he’d go with me to my follow-up, but he hid in the hospital stairwell comforting Bianca.]
[If I never called him out, could he have kept playing the perfect husband forever?]
Line after line.
I had no memory of any of this, but tears started falling without warning.
My chest tightened, like my body still remembered the pain.
Bang!
The study door opened with a spare key.
Lorenzo burst in.
When he saw the notebook in my hands, his face went white.
“Don’t read that.”
He rushed over and snatched the notebook away.
The photos tucked inside scattered across the floor.
The Westchester safe house. The birthday cake. Valeria. Bianca. And Lorenzo.
The photos had been taken from far away, clearly shot in secret.
In other words, before the accident, I had already uncovered the whole truth.
Lorenzo looked down at the photos and froze completely.
He thought he had hidden everything perfectly. But the old me had seen through it all long ago.
I sat on the floor and looked up at him.
“So. You all thought I didn’t know anything. But I was only playing along with you.”
Lorenzo’s knees buckled.
He knelt among the scattered photos.
His hands trembled as he picked them up.
Tears dripped onto the photos one by one.
“You knew… this whole time, you knew everything. Why did you let me keep lying to you? Were you punishing me on purpose?”
I watched him fall apart.
But I felt nothing.
“I don’t know.”
I paused.
“But now I finally understand.”
“Why my brain would rather forget everything than remember you ever again.”
