My Roommate Fattened Me Up To Steal My Billionaire Fiancé Chapter 02
After spitting out the pill, I scrubbed my face with cold water.
I stared at my reflection. My face was buried beneath layers of fat, and my eyes had been squeezed nearly shut. I closed them and drew a deep breath.
The weight dragging on my body and the strain on my heart were real, but beneath it all was a soul that had already died once and come back hardened.
Reid, just give me three months.
Three months from now, I would stand before you with my head held high.
Back in bed, I picked up my phone and tapped the pinned conversation with the fox profile picture.
In my previous life, insecurity and anxiety had driven me to seek constant reassurance from Reid right up until the moment we were supposed to meet.
This time, I was taking control.
I knew Reid well. Although he was the heir to one of D.C.’s most powerful old-money families and came across as aloof and untouchable in public, he was completely different online. Having grown up without much warmth from his family, he became intensely clingy—even a little needy—once he believed he had found his soulmate.
I took a deep breath and typed out a message.
Me: [Baby, could we postpone tomorrow’s meeting? I’m sorry… I don’t think I’m ready yet.]
His reply came almost instantly.
Reid: [What’s wrong, Nora? Are you feeling sick? Or did I do something to upset you? 😟🥺]
Reid: [I’ve already booked my flight and reserved a table. I’ve tried on every suit I own over and over, trying to decide what to wear tomorrow. Do you… not want to see me?]
Even through the screen, I could picture the six-foot-two man who was normally ruthless in business looking like an abandoned puppy.
My heart softened. The regrets from my previous life gave way to resolve as I replied.
Me: [No. I really do want to meet you. My hormones have been out of balance lately, and I haven’t been feeling well. I want you to meet me when I’m healthy and at my best—not like this.]
Me: [Baby, could you give me three more months? I promise I’ll be healthy when I come see you three months from now. I won’t break my word.]
Several minutes passed without a response. I knew he was trying not to sulk.
Sure enough, a voice message arrived a moment later. His deep, magnetic voice was openly plaintive and needy.
“All right… we’ll do it your way, Nora. But three months is forever. Every day is going to drag. You have to make it up to me with a call tonight. Talk me to sleep, or I won’t be able to.”
Tears pricked my eyes at the familiar sound of his voice, and I sent back a quiet reply.
Me: [Okay. I’ll make it up to you tonight.]
With Reid reassured, I closed the conversation.
When I looked over, Vanessa had her back to me. Her fingers flew across her phone screen, and a dark, triumphant smile curled at her lips.
I knew exactly what she was planning.
Too bad I had already canceled my meeting with Reid. This time, she was bound to fail.
I scoffed to myself and pulled the privacy curtain closed.
Vanessa, go ahead and spend tonight dreaming about marrying into old money.
