Chapter 6 Regret
The thought of losing Eric caused her unbearable heartache.
So, if this was only him throwing a tantrum, she believed he would eventually come back. Once he did, everything between them would return to the way it had been before.
This time, however, she knew Eric was deeply hostile toward Callum and Isabella.
So, to calm his anger and make up for everything he had endured recently, Jessica made up her mind. Once Eric returned, she would send Callum and Isabella far away.
After thinking it through, she suddenly felt relieved.
She picked up the torn-up marriage certificate from the ground, clutched it tightly in her hand, and prepared to leave.
Just as she turned around, Callum suddenly pinched Isabella’s arm. At once, Isabella burst into tears.
Upon seeing Jessica look over, he apologized, “She hasn’t seen you for too long and wants to spend more time with you. That’s why she can’t bear to see you leave and cries.”
Jessica sighed, put the marriage certificate in her arms, and picked up Isabella.
‘Since Eric is still throwing a tantrum, I might as well take advantage of this time to spend some quality time with Isabella,’ she thought. ‘After all, she will have very few chances to see me when Eric comes back.’
At that thought, a trace of heartache appeared in Jessica’s eyes, so she carried Isabella and took her out to different places.
That evening, Callum came into her room with Isabella in his arms. His face was pale as he told her Isabella would be frightened if she could not see her.
Since Jessica had compromised once for Isabella’s sake, she would definitely compromise a second time.
Before long, Callum and Isabella naturally moved into the master bedroom.
That night, he wore white sleepwear that loosely covered his frame, revealing just enough to make his intentions obvious.
He took the sleeping Isabella out of Jessica’s arms and then traced circles on Jessica’s chest seductively.
“Jess, since Eric isn’t here right now, he won’t know if we have some fun either,” he urged. “Weren’t you feeling good the last few times? I’ve learned a lot of new skills. I can please you even better in bed.”
With that, Callum tried to lean over and pin Jessica down.
A flicker of desire crossed Jessica’s eyes. However, the moment she touched Callum, Eric’s lifeless gaze suddenly flashed into her mind. He was looking at everything before him calmly as if he had expected her infidelity all along.
That still, empty gaze burned Jessica’s outstretched hand.
She abruptly shoved Callum away. Then, she forced her eyes shut. “Get out!” she shouted.
“Jess, is everything okay?”
Callum still refused to give up, calling her name softly beside her ear.
The next thing he knew, Jessica grabbed him tightly and dragged him out of the room mercilessly.
Callum called her name twice from the doorway but received no answer. Thus, he had no choice but to leave reluctantly.
Once everything quieted down, Jessica leaned against the door and slumped onto the floor.
For some reason, Eric was all she could think about at this moment.
She remembered the way he used to smile at her. The way he nodded gently whenever she spoke. The way he
ī tolerated her again and again. The way he stayed strong, even when everything hurt.
And she remembered the utter despair in his eyes when she refused to acknowledge him as her husband at the hospital.
At that moment, Jessica finally had to admit it. She truly regretted hurting Eric.
‘I shouldn’t have done that at the hospital that day,’ she thought. ‘Or rather, my life and Eric’s life began to take different paths gradually from the moment Isabella was kidnapped.
‘Frankly speaking, I don’t want things to be this way. After all, I had said that I would only love Eric for the rest of my life. But his heart seemed to have been locked away from me ever since I screwed up three years ago. I just wanted…’
Jessica paused because even she no longer knew what she wanted.
