I’m the Alpha Female Now Chapter 04
The moment I left, the guards who had downed the potion began feeling its effects almost instantly.
Callan, the first to drink, let out a long breath as a look of pleasant surprise washed over his face. “The poison inside me… feels totally gone! My body feels so light all of a sudden!”
He stretched his shoulders and let out an amazed gasp. “It really doesn’t hurt at all anymore. Yelena, your potion is mind-blowing!”
The rest of the guards were overjoyed, swarming around Yelena and showering her with praise.
“Yelena, you’re incredible! Your modified formula works ten times better than the old one!”
“You’ve got real talent! This antidote kicked in instantly!”
“Wendy’s formula was way too conservative. The results were painfully slow. She can’t hold a candle to you.”
Yelena stood in the middle of the crowd, putting on a coy act while barely hiding the smugness in her eyes. “I just wanted to help everyone recover faster, that’s all.”
“Yelena, don’t be so modest!” Callan shouted. “Wendy was our healer for years, and every single treatment took over half a month to finish. It’s never as fast as yours.”
Drunk on this brief burst of relief, everyone threw my warnings completely out the window.
Someone shouted from the crowd, “Why don’t we just replace Wendy for good and make Yelena our official team healer?”
Everyone nodded in agreement. Not a single person remembered how I had spent countless nights brewing potions to drag them back from death’s door over the last five years.
Yelena put on a meek expression, pretending to talk them down. “Please don’t speak about Ms. Conner like that. She’s just set in her old ways. I just got lucky with the tweaks. As long as it helps you, that’s all that matters.”
Jacob stood off to the side. His eyes were locked on Yelena in the center of the crowd, completely unbothered by my departure.
A swell of pride washed over his face, as if Yelena’s newfound glory belonged to him.
He spoke up slowly, riding the wave of the crew’s enthusiasm. “I’ve always believed in Yelena’s abilities. The proof is right here. She did an amazing job. From now on, all healing matters in the patrol team will be under her full care.”
Not a single soul realized that their temporary comfort was nothing more than an illusion. The frostleaf had forcefully suppressed the wolfsbane, planting a lethal trigger that was only waiting for the right moment to detonate.
Early the next morning, the patrol team assembled on schedule and set off into the mountain forests for a routine
sweep.
The long trek, the constant strain on their minds, and the immense physical exhaustion triggered the hidden time bomb inside their bodies instantly.
A young guard was the first to give out. He clutched his chest as a blood-curdling cry tore from his throat. “I can’t control my wolf! I have no strength left at all!”
Agonized screams quickly broke out across the line. More and more guards began trembling violently, dropping to
their knees one after another as they completely lost their ability to fight.
Jacob’s face paled instantly. A surge of terror seized his heart as he bellowed orders, “Everyone fall back right now! Fast!”
But it was already too late.
Rogues lurking in the shadows caught the scent of vulnerable prey. They burst out from the dark and lunged forward to launch a brutal ambush.
They gave the helpless patrol team zero breathing room, tearing and biting like rabid beasts.
Racked with excruciating pain, the guards couldn’t fight back at all. Within moments, the entire team was heavily mauled in a bloody bath.
Just as they teetered on the brink of death, a high-tier guard unit passing through arrived just in time.
They fought off the Rogues, rescued the dying guards, and rushed everyone straight to the pack clinic.
Inside the clinic, a team of seasoned healers took turns examining the fallen guards. In the end, every single healer shook their head with a grim expression.
“The frostleaf in the potion you recently took reacted with the remaining wolfsbane, driving the poison deep into your internal organs.
“This damage has done irreversible harm to your wolves. Coupled with the trauma from the Rogues’ claws, none of you will ever be able to shift or fight again. You’ll be reduced to the weakest Omegas.”
A guard’s voice trembled violently. “What? We can never fight again? No! We’re the top patrol team! This can’t be happening to us!”
“That’s right! Just give us a potion! Cure us!”
The healer let out a low sigh, shaking his head. “I’m sorry. There is nothing I can do.”
“How could this be? We’ve suffered far worse injuries before, and a single dose from Wendy always healed us right up!”
The healer explained, “This kind of damage is permanent. Not even the most brilliant healer in the world could reverse it.”
A suffocating silence fell over the room as the truth sank in.
It finally hit them that my frantic attempts to stop them had never been driven by jealousy. I was trying to save their lives.
Regret sliced into their hearts like a jagged blade.
One of the guards snapped his head up and slammed his fist hard against the bedframe. His voice trembled with pure hatred as he asked, “Where… is Yelena?”
