I Called Him from Under an AVALANCHE, But He Declined to Bed His Secretary Chapter 06
He sped to Harper’s place. If anyone knew whereÂ
Hazel went, it was her.Â
His hands wouldn’t stop shaking on the wheel.Â
He made the long drive in record time. He skidded.Â
to a stop in her driveway, tires screeching.Â
“Harper!”Â
Harper opened the door. The second she saw whoÂ
it was, her expression turned to stone. “Get out.”Â
Julian shoved past her into the house. “Hazel!Â
Hazel!”Â
He tore through every room, frantic, calling herÂ
name. She wasn’t there. Harper watched him fromÂ
the doorway.Â
She leaned against the wall, arms crossed, lookingÂ
at him like something she’d scraped off theÂ
bottom of her shoe. “You really thought she’d beÂ
here?”Â
“What right do you have to come looking for her?”Â
Julian stared at her – Harper, who’d known them. since high school, who’d watched the whole thing unravel- and felt nothing but a hollow pit whereÂ
his chest used to be.Â
“You know where she is.” His voice cracked.Â
“Harper, it’s not what she thinksÂ
explain. I have to.”Â
–Â
I need toÂ
He dropped his head. “I’m begging you. Please.”Â
Harper looked at him and laughedÂ
the cold kind.Â
“I don’t know where she is. She didn’t tell me, andÂ
even if she had, I wouldn’t tell you. So drop it,Â
Julian.”Â
“I used to think you were a decent person. That was my mistake. You never deserved her notÂ
even close.”Â
“Now get out of my house.” She slammed the doorÂ
in his face.Â
He didn’t leave. He sat on her front step, hollow–eyed, and stayed there all night.Â
He was betting on one pathetic possibility – maybe she was inside, maybe she’d see him out. there and her resolve would break. But the hours.Â
crawled from dark to dawn.Â
No one came out… Julian drove home at sunrise, eyes bloodshot and swollen. Sienna didn’t seemÂ
to notice.Â
She grabbed his arm and pulled him toward theÂ
door. “Julian! We agreed – today’s the day! We’re going to city hall!”Â
He didn’t even register the drive. One moment heÂ
was at the door, the next he was standing in front.Â
of city hall. Sienna was beaming. Julian felt theÂ
ground tilt.Â
The thought of marrying her made his skin crawl.Â
He turned around and left. “Julian!”Â
Sienna’s scream hit him between the shoulder blades. “Walk away from me and I’ll get rid of this. baby!”Â
Julian stopped dead. He turned back slowly, and when his eyes found her stomach, something in his face twisted like he was looking at a trap. that had already closed around him.Â
The panic left Sienna’s face as fast as it came. She was at his side in seconds, threading her arm through his, victory barely hidden. “Come on. Let’sÂ
go in.”Â
He went through the process like a sleepwalker. Signed wherever they told him to sign. Took the certificate. It felt like it burned in his hands. SiennalÂ
was glowing.Â
Julian stared at the floor. Then he shoved theÂ
certificate into Sienna’s hands like he couldn’tÂ
stand to touch it.Â
“I need to go.” He was already walking away. HeÂ
didn’t look back to see her face.Â
He drove for hours with no destination, scanningÂ
every sidewalk, every café window, hoping for aÂ
glimpse of her. By the time he pulled into theÂ
driveway, it was dark.Â
He pushed the door open. Every light in the house.Â
was blazing. His heart lurched and for oneÂ
stupid, desperate second, he let himself hope.Â
–Â
“Hazel Graham! I knew you’d I knew you’d comeÂ
back! I-”Â
All of it the relief, the hope, every word on hisÂ
tongue–collapsed the instant he saw Siennal standing in the bedroom.Â
Sienna ignored the look on his face.Â
–Â
orÂ
pretended to. She was busy unpacking, spreadingÂ
her things across every surface. “Julian, comeÂ
–Â
look can I put this crystal Aries ornament here?”Â
“I’m putting my clothes next to yours, okay? ThisÂ
vanity’s so outdated, Julian can we get a newÂ
one tomorrow?”Â
“Julian…” He watched her move through the room. With every item she placed, every drawer she filled, another piece of Hazel vanished.Â
Something in Julian’s chest locked shut. “Get out.”Â
Sienna froze mid–sentence, hands still holding a picture frame. “Take your things and get out!”Â
Julian roared.Â
But this time, Sienna didn’t move. She stared atÂ
him with wounded eyes, and the tears came onÂ
cue.Â
“Why should I leave?” Tears streaked down herÂ
cheeks. “You’re still thinking about her, aren’t you?”Â
She flung the marriage certificate at his feet. “I’m your wife now! You don’t get to throw me out!”Â
Sienna kept going, her tears and accusations blurring together. “Julian, you have to let her go!”Â
His jaw clenched.Â
He pried her fingers off his arm and walked out.Â
The house behind him didn’t feel like homeÂ
anymore it felt like a cage.Â
He ended up at the cemetery. Hazel’s parents. He stood in front of their headstone, staring at theirÂ
photos, and the memories hit him like somethingÂ
with teeth.Â
–Â
His stepmother had destroyed him stripped hisÂ
name from the company, thrown him out of the house with nothing. He was half–dead on the street when Hazel found him and brought himÂ
home.Â
Her parents didn’t ask questions. They heard the story, gave him a bed, and treated him like family.Â
Hazel’s eyes were always bright back then. “Don’t worry about it – we’ve got plenty of room.”Â
“You’re stuck with me now, so relax. Super–Hazel’sÂ
got your back.”Â
That girl – brave, ridiculous, calling herself aÂ
–Â
superhero with a straight face she’d walked.Â
right into his heart like she owned the place. WhenÂ
did he stop making her feel like she belonged?Â
When did those bright eyes go dark every timeÂ
they looked at him until there was nothing left.Â
but silence?Â
The pain nearly folded him in half. He bent doubleÂ
in front of the graves, choking on air that wouldn’tÂ
come. He hadn’t just done something wrong.Â
He’d lost her.
