They Dragged Me Off The Plane And Dozens Died Waiting Chapter 07
Three hours later, the plane landed smoothly inÂ
Oak Ridge City.Â
The regular travelers didn’t notice anythingÂ
unusual. It was Labor Day weekend, so the airportÂ
was crowded.Â
As soon as I got off the plane, I was surrounded by plainclothes tactical officers.Â
“Dr. Carter, the airport is secure. They can’t getÂ
weapons inside.”Â
“But outside the airport, there will be gaps. YouÂ
need to stay within our protective perimeter at allÂ
times.”Â
Commander Davis’s tone was grave.Â
I just nodded. I didn’t say what I was thinking, thatÂ
I was their target and they didn’t need to sacrificeÂ
themselves for me.Â
Maybe in terms of pure math, one life for a team.Â
of tactical officers and thirty–five civilians was aÂ
good trade.Â
Maybe the numbers would keep climbing alongÂ
the way.Â
The classic trolley problem. When it’s one lifeÂ
versus nearly a hundred, maybe the choice looks.Â
clear.Â
But that’s not how my country works.Â
We take both sides.Â
I reached into my pocket and pulled out the deviceÂ
I always carried.Â
This was the latest version. It was the reason I’dÂ
cracked so many espionage cases.Â
“Northeast. Vehicle A, black BMW. It’s a problem.”Â
“Behind me, the woman in the red windbreaker with the light brown curly hair. She’s a problem.”Â
“Four suspicious vehicles are closing in on us.”Â
“Vehicle B… Vehicle A…”Â
I kept calling out positions and license plates.Â
Commander Davis relayed the informationÂ
through his earpiece, and the other units intercepted each vehicle.Â
“What the hell is that thing? How does it do that?”Â
one of the tactical officers whispered.Â
“Eyes forward. Stay sharp.”Â
We got into the vehicle.Â
“Head straight for the mountains,” I said.Â
“But Dr. Carter, the person we arrested is at theÂ
station. He’s the only one who knows whereÂ
they’re being held,” Commander Davis saidÂ
anxiously.Â
“He has partners. Their goal is to kill me. He won’tÂ
talk as long as I’m still alive.”Â
“He probably wouldn’t talk even if I was dead.”Â
“We’re better off finding them ourselves.”Â
The driver looked in the rearview mirror, waiting forÂ
orders.Â
Commander Davis hesitated for only a fewÂ
seconds. “Head for the mountains.”Â
“Report. The target vehicles have changedÂ
course.”Â
“Emily, answer your damn phone!” James wasÂ
shouting in the command center.Â
But I couldn’t hear him.Â
Oak Ridge City sits next to a national forestÂ
steeped in local lore.Â
The terrain is rough inside. Looking for anyone inÂ
there was like searching for a needle in aÂ
haystack.Â
And the enemy had anti thermal imaging gear,Â
which made it even harder.Â
I sat in the vehicle, watching my device and callingÂ
out suspicious vehicles as we drove. The escortÂ
units intercepted them one by one.Â
At an intersection, a woman pushing a babyÂ
carriage suddenly stepped into the road in front ofÂ
- us.Â
The driver slammed on the brakes.Â
The car behind us couldn’t stop in time andÂ
plowed into us.Â
“If this thing still runs, drive. We don’t have time.”Â
“That woman is a problem. Grab her.”Â
The moment the words left my mouth, the woman,Â
who had looked so frightened a second ago,Â
pulled a gun from the baby carriage.Â
The dark muzzle pointed straight at me.
