A Debt Repaid In Blood, A Marriage Paid In Silence Chapter 06
He rushed home in his car, speeding down theÂ
highway.Â
The first thing he did was search the house forÂ
Wren Hale, but she was nowhere to be found.Â
He tore through the entire villa, and finally had toÂ
accept the truth–she was gone.Â
Only a divorce agreement was left on the table.Â
Julian stared at it in a daze, and the wound on hisÂ
hand throbbed again.Â
A strange, unfamiliar pain shot through his heart,Â
too.Â
He refused to believe it. That woman, who’dÂ
always been so desperate for money, would justÂ
walk away from the marriage like this.Â
But then it hit him.Â
Wren had only wanted money to save her mother.Â
Now that her mother was gone, money no longerÂ
mattered. Not even the marriage.Â
Sweat broke out on Julian’s palms. He jumped toÂ
his feet in a panic and called Wren.Â
But no one answered.Â
Nola flashed into his mind, and a glimmer of hopeÂ
filled his chest.Â
As long as he had their daughter, Wren would haveÂ
to come back.Â
But the next second, he froze. He had no ideaÂ
where Nola was.Â
A dark glint flashed in Julian’s eyes, and he let outÂ
a cold laugh.Â
Then he called the police.Â
When Lila found out Julian had called the cops,Â
she was over the moon. She thought he’d finallyÂ
come to his senses.Â
But when I showed up at the police station, JulianÂ
changed his mind and dropped all the charges.Â
Lila flew into a rage. She charged at me, grabbedÂ
my collar, and raised her hand to hit me.Â
But before her hand could make contact, JulianÂ
grabbed her wrist and shoved her away.Â
He wrapped an arm around me and walked out ofÂ
the station without a word.Â
“Julian! That monster killed our baby! How canÂ
you be so unfair!?”Â
“Even if I did knock over her mother’s ashes onÂ
purpose, a dead person can’t compare to a livingÂ
one!”Â
“And it’s not all my fault! You’re the one who gaveÂ
me power, who made me think I could get awayÂ
with it! Now you’re throwing all the blame on me-”Â
“SHUT UP!”Â
Julian’s veins popped out on his forehead as heÂ
spun around and cut her off.Â
He stared at her for two seconds, then let out aÂ
cold laugh.Â
“Is it not enough money I’ve given you? That’s allÂ
you’re worth. Don’t be greedy.”Â
“I never planned to marry you, not for a second.Â
Even if that baby had been born, I would’ve justÂ
given you more money and taken the child. Now do you understand?”Â
He’d felt a little sorry for her once. But first she’dÂ
gotten pregnant on purpose to force Wren out, then she’d given his daughter a sleeping pill–andÂ
he’d let it slide.Â
But she just kept pushing Wren, acting like a victim.Â
And now his marriage was falling apart because of her. He’d been more than generous with her.Â
With that, he didn’t spare the ashen–faced Lila another glance. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me into his car.Â
I stared out the window, saying nothing.Â
In the past two days, I’d buried my mother in aÂ
cemetery.Â
I’d thought keeping her ashes close would beÂ
enough, but it was selfish of me. She’d been tiredÂ
for so long. She deserved to rest in peace.Â
“Wren, come back home. I’ll never bring otherÂ
women into the house again.”Â
Julian’s voice was tight, a hint of pleading in it-Â
but it made me sick to my stomach.Â
Not I’ll never cheat on you again. Not I’m so sorry for everything I’ve done.Â
Just I’ll never bring other women into the house.Â
again.Â
I let out a laugh, cold and mocking.Â
Julian’s hands tightened on the steering wheel, a look of struggle on his face.Â
“Tell me what you want. This happened, but we can face it together, can’t we?”Â
“Divorce.”Â
I whispered the two words, and had nothing moreÂ
to say.Â
Julian shook his head, looking at me with pity.Â
“Where will you go without me? You have no job, no family. You want to take Nola with you, but what can you give her?”Â
His words were cold and blunt, meant to break meÂ
down.Â
But I’d already thought it all through. I’d originally planned to leave Nola with him.Â
But after what Lila did… let’s be honest, NolaÂ
might not even live to grow up with them.Â
“I already found a job. If you really care about ourÂ
daughter, give her more child support.”Â
“Do you really have to fight me on this?”Â
Julian slammed his fist against the steering wheelÂ
and slammed on the brakes at the side of theÂ
road.
