The Heir He Needed, the Wife He Betrayed Chapter 06
Madison sent a message.Â
She said she was spotting.Â
She also said the child had accidentally fallen andÂ
hurt his forehead, and that he was crying hardÂ
from the pain.Â
Evelyn’s questions and tears left Cole guilty andÂ
ashamed.Â
He was desperate to escape.Â
So he grabbed his coat and hurried to New York.Â
After the doctor examined Madison, they said.Â
there was nothing wrong with her.Â
Spotting in early pregnancy was normal.Â
The wound on the child’s forehead had also beenÂ
properly bandaged.Â
Madison and Milo crowded around him, repeating the same clingy, flattering words over and over.Â
Cole grew irritated.Â
He wanted to leave again as soon as possible.Â
After all, Evelyn had been emotionally unstable lately.Â
But Madison would not let him go.Â
“I’m still pregnant. Can’t you stay with me a little. longer?”Â
“The one you have at home can’t even have children. What’s the point of going back?”Â
“Besides, our son can’t bear to let you leave either.”Â
Milo immediately lifted his head.Â
In a soft little voice that sounded as if it had beenÂ
rehearsed countless times, he drew out his words.Â
“Daddy, pleeease don’t go!”Â
“Play with me. I want Daddy to play with me!”Â
As Cole looked at the child like that, a strange anger suddenly flared in his chest.Â
A perfectly good child had been raised by her to read people’s moods and perform for approval.Â
There was none of the honesty or backbone a boyÂ
should have.Â
“Madison, you should know your place.”Â
He held back again and again, but in the end, he still laid everything bare.Â
“I only let you raise him until he was two out of consideration for your bond with him.”Â
“If he gets any older, he’ll start remembering things. It’s time to bring him back to theÂ
Hawthorne family.”Â
Madison’s face turned deathly pale.Â
One second, she had been dreaming of becomingÂ
Mrs. Hawthorne.Â
The next, she was dragged brutally back to reality.Â
Unwilling to accept it, she blurted out withoutÂ
thinking, “Why should I give my child to that oldÂ
woman?”Â
“We’re the real family. I’m the one related to him by blood!”Â
“Divorce her and marry me, okay?”Â
“Shut up!”Â
Cole cut her off coldly. “I made everything veryÂ
clear to you from the beginning.”Â
“You were only a baby–making vessel.”Â
“You were lucky enough to look like my wife. ThatÂ
was the only reason you got this chance.”Â
The instant he heard her insult Evelyn, there wasÂ
no warmth left in the way Cole looked at her.Â
“Have I been too lenient with you lately? Is that why you’ve forgotten your place?”Â
He warned her, each word sharp and deliberate.Â
“Don’t get greedy. If you push too far, you may end up with nothing at all.”Â
His merciless words were like a bucket of iceÂ
water poured over Madison, chilling her to the bone.Â
The dizzying dream she had been floating in for days shattered in an instant.Â
So Evelyn was truly that important to him.Â
A wave of fear suddenly came over her.Â
What would happen if Cole found out about the messages she had secretly sent?Â
Cole noticed the panic on her face and studied her suspiciously.Â
“You haven’t done anything stupid behind my back, have you?”Â
“No!” Madison denied it instinctively.Â
Cole gave a cold snort. “You’d better not have.”Â
He turned and left. This time, Madison did not dare stop him.Â
All she could do was pray desperately in her heart.Â
She hoped Evelyn would do what she had done before and never reply.Â
She hoped Evelyn would pretend nothing had happened.Â
Unfortunately, Madison’s small, calculating prayer was not heard by God.
