I Was His Wife, She Was His Everything Chapter 01

I Was His Wife, She Was His Everything Chapter 01

Three months pregnant, I took a part-time job at a bar just to make ends meet.

That same night, I walked straight into a private room where my husband was partying with his best friend.

Ethan Hayes lounged against the couch, casually lighting a cigarette.

“Is three million dollars a month really not enough for a wife?”

His best friend nearly jumped out of his seat.

“Three million dollars isn’t enough? Clara must be out of her mind. Don’t tell me she’s keeping some other guy on the side.”

The room fell silent.

Ethan’s expression darkened.

“She told me last night that she was short on money, so I sent her another five hundred thousand dollars. Then this morning, she asked for a divorce and said that if I couldn’t afford to support her, I shouldn’t bother.”

I stood outside the door, trembling with rage.

I looked down at my already noticeable baby bump.

I couldn’t take it anymore.

I shoved the door open and stormed inside.

Before Ethan even had time to react, I slapped him across the face.

“Tell me. How many wives do you have?”

His eyes were bloodshot. He clenched his jaw as he stared at me.

“Only one…”

I froze.

“Then why do I only get five hundred dollars a month?”

After my period was a month late, I gritted my teeth and bought the cheapest pregnancy test I could find at the drugstore.

When I saw the two pink lines, my vision went black.

I hurriedly took a picture and sent it to my best friend, Nora Brooks.

[What am I supposed to do, Nora? I got pregnant when I’m already broke.]

Her reply came instantly.

[Ethan Hayes is such an asshole. He won’t give you any money, but he keeps giving you things nobody wants.]

After cursing Ethan out, she turned her anger on me.

[Didn’t you buy condoms yourself? Are you seriously this stupid? Why didn’t you use one?]

I could practically feel her fury through the screen.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want to use one.

I couldn’t afford to buy any more.

The five hundred dollars I received every month barely covered food. Buying condoms was the last

thing on my mind.

Besides, Ethan had always wanted a child. If I stopped buying condoms, he’d probably be thrilled.

I never imagined that the one time we didn’t use one, I’d end up pregnant.

The growling in my stomach dragged me back to reality.

Using the hundred dollars Nora had lent me, I went to the nearest grocery store and bought a loaf of

bread and a carton of milk that were about to expire.

They were half price.

I leaned against the wall outside the store, taking a bite of bread and a sip of milk.

Suddenly, the whole thing felt absurd.

I was the wife of the CEO of Hayes Group.

I lived in a mansion worth tens of millions of dollars.

Yet I was so broke that I had to hunt for clearance food just to eat.

After swallowing the last bite of bread, I finally decided to call Ethan.

As expected, Veronica Thorne answered.

She was Ethan’s secretary and the person responsible for sending me my monthly living allowance.

Her tone was impatient.

“Ms. Miller, unless I’m mistaken, I already transferred your allowance for this month.”

I forced myself to stay calm, trying not to let her hear how badly my voice was shaking.

“I’m pregnant. Could you send me a little more this month?”

There was a brief silence.

Then Veronica scoffed.

“Last time, you claimed you had low blood sugar, so I made an exception and sent you an extra

hundred dollars. And now you’re using pregnancy as another excuse to ask for more money?”

Her voice turned cold.

“Mr. Hayes doesn’t make his money by magic. You really need to learn how to control your

spending.”

Before I could explain, she hung up.

Ethan had been the one who promised me before we got married that he’d take care of me.

He told me I could stay home and enjoy being a wealthy wife without ever having to worry about

money.

But five hundred dollars a month wasn’t enough.

Eventually, I tried taking a part-time job at a coffee shop to earn some spending money.

When Ethan found out, he bought the entire shop.

“I look like a man who’s short on money? Why is my own wife working part-time?”

He wasn’t short on money.

Not even close.

But he never gave me another dollar.

I remembered Nora’s question.

[Are you keeping the baby?]

Honestly, I didn’t know.

Maybe once Ethan found out I was pregnant, he’d give me more money for the baby’s/sake.

At least, that was what I hoped.
