They Waited for My Sister to Wake, So I Called Off My Wedding Chapter 07
When I landed in Switzerland, my heart sank with me.
When I walked out of the airport, the project lead came to pick me up.
I suddenly realized it was a senior I hadn’t seen in a long time, someone I didn’t even have contact info for.
“It’s been a while,” we said at the same time.
Evan Mercer didn’t ask about my life back home. He just took my luggage and confirmed one more time,
“Elara, the project lasts five years, and you can’t leave the base. You still have a chance to go back.”
“Honestly, there aren’t many five–year stretches in a life.”
I nodded without hesitation.
I’d already missed more five–year stretches than I could count, ones that could have been for myself.
This time, I wouldn’t let go no matter what.
Over the next five years, Adrian flew to Switzerland countless times. He tried every possible way and finally
found where Elara was.
But all he could do was stand outside the Swiss Alps Research Base, powerless.
Adrian wouldn’t leave, so Evan came to see me.
“Elara, you should go see him once.”
“Evan, let’s not break the rules. I’m not caving.”
He lowered his head and smiled. “I knew you’d say that. Then we’ll handle it by the book.”
Adrian was pushed to the local police station by Base Security and processed for removal.
He struggled and shouted,
“I’m here to see my wife. What right do you have to arrest me?”
The police asked him to prove it. Adrian couldn’t provide a single piece of evidence.
Because he and Elara had never gotten their marriage license.
“I…”
In that moment, Adrian clearly understood. He didn’t even have the legal right to cling to Elara.
Adrian was deported. Iris, now jobless, found him.
“Adrian, you still have me.”
Adrian sneered. “I don’t want anything except Elara.”
Elara always said he was the light of her life. Only now did he realize Elara was the light of his.
In his third year after graduation, he’d become a company partner and attracted a lot of attention.
At the same time, he’d been targeted by many senior colleagues.
During those dark days, Elara had been the one who stayed by his side.
She’d been under plenty of pressure herself, but she’d still researched all kinds of recipes and cooked for him
every day.
Like a little sun, she’d circled around him.
She’d hold his hand tight and say, “Adrian, being happy is what matters most. I don’t ask for anything. I just
want you to be happy.”
Iris had come with her mother Naomi Kensington. Seeing Adrian’s cold attitude, Naomi grew anxious.
“Adrian, you can’t just abandon Iris. You promised to take care of her for the rest of her life.”
Adrian laughed out loud.
He remembered why he’d agreed to take care of Iris. It was the year before the wedding. Elara said she’d let it
go.
Because she was so happy now, she felt those old wounds didn’t matter as much.
She even thought Iris’s sleep disorder was pitiful. But she hadn’t expected things to turn out like this. Adrian
hadn’t either.
He met Naomi’s eyes, his voice utterly cold. “I only promised to take care of Elara’s sister for the rest of her
life.”
“Elara doesn’t even want to see you. What do you have to do with me?”
Naomi and Iris both froze. Before leaving, Iris laughed too. She mocked Adrian.
“You think cutting ties with me will make Elara forgive you?”
“Adrian, you and her will never happen. Not in this lifetime.”
Adrian didn’t argue. He didn’t expect Elara’s forgiveness.
He only wanted to wait for her to come back, to be the person she’d see when she turned around.
Even if she never turned around, he could spend his whole life watching over her like this.
