They Waited for My Sister to Wake, So I Called Off My Wedding Chapter 04
The moment I said it, the three of them froze.
But the first to speak was Adrian. A flicker of disgust passed through his eyes.
“Elara, even if the baby affected your work, you lost the promotion. How could you do something like this?”
“Iris already feels terrible. Do you have to make up a lie to make her feel guilty for the rest of her life?”
I laughed at myself and met Adrian’s gaze. I didn’t say anything, but he looked away.
When I was on the operating table, I thought I was doing it for work too.
But after I came out, I understood. I didn’t want the baby because I no longer loved Adrian.
“You’re the one who should leave. If you hadn’t been so petty today, none of this would have gotten so ugly.”
Outside, it was pouring rain. Adrian sighed and didn’t stop me.
“Come back after Iris feels a little better.”
It was late at night and raining hard. I couldn’t get a single ride. Dragging my weak body, I sat down in a pavilion in the park.
I don’t know how long it was before Iris called.
“Elara, don’t be mad. Adrian was worried I’d be alone with my thoughts, so he brought me to the Shaw Marital Home for the night.”
“The bed you picked is so comfortable. No wonder Adrian just said you’ve always had good taste.”
I froze. She was lying on my marriage bed, wearing the red nightgown I’d prepared for my wedding night.
It would be a lie to say it didn’t hurt.
The next second, Adrian’s voice came from off camera.
“Iris said staying at home would remind her of what happened today. She’s not used to hotels, so I brought her to our house.”
“You and Iris are about the same size. She can wear your stuff.”
It was ridiculous.
I repeated Adrian’s words in my head. She can wear your clothes.
He hadn’t considered at all whether I minded.
When I didn’t speak, Iris teased me. “Elara, you’re not worried Adrian will mistake me for you, are you?”
Adrian heard her clearly and didn’t deny it.
I said nothing. Iris got bored and hung up. Then she posted a selfie from my house on Instagram.
The comments were all wishing her a happy marriage and saying true love always finds its way.
Rain slanted against me.
I laughed out loud and liked the post too.
Ironically, my profile picture was still our wedding photo.
The next second, Adrian texted me. [Elara, don’t take it to heart. Once this blows over, I’ll set the record straight myself.]
I only replied with two lines. [It doesn’t matter. I’m tired.]
[Like you always said, losing something means something better is waiting.]
At the top of the chat, he was typing for a long time. Then a few words came.
[Elara, let’s talk tomorrow. For real.]
He said he’d come see me tomorrow afternoon.
I didn’t refuse. I asked him to meet me at the Airport Café near Sea-Tac.
I was going to end things with him completely.
But the next day, Adrian was late. When he finally called, he explained, “Iris didn’t get up, so I changed our tickets to the evening.”
“She’s scared to take the train across the country by herself, so I got a ticket to go with her.”
“Once I get her there, I’ll come straight to you.”
I lowered my head and smiled. My voice was calm.
“No need, Adrian. We’re completely over.”
As I spoke, the airport announcement rang out.
“Ladies and gentlemen, Flight 325 to Switzerland is about to take off. Please proceed to your gate.”
