They Waited for My Sister to Wake, So I Called Off My Wedding Chapter 02

Adrian pulled Iris into his arms.

When I didn’t react, he looked at me like he didn’t understand.

“Elara, what is wrong with you today? Do you have to make this so ugly?”

My mother gave me a hard look too.

“Elara, what is wrong with you today? Do you have to make this so ugly?”

I laughed coldly and took the tiara off my head.

At the sight, Iris ran out.

Adrian’s brows knit tight. He took the whole convoy and chased after her.

The room went quiet in an instant. The “Mr. & Mrs.” sign seemed to glare at me.

My mother had hung the biggest one on Iris’s door when she decorated.

“Iris has been sleeping like this since she was little. Maybe your wedding will bring her some good luck and snap her out of it.”

She said it like it was the most natural thing in the world. She never once asked me if I wanted that.

Adrian had already pushed the reception toasts back two hours to leave Iris time for a nap.

But he never considered whether I, standing in high heels for two extra hours, would be tired.

I let out a hollow laugh. I should have known a long time ago. I wasn’t the star of this wedding.

Not long after, a notification popped up. A video of someone jumping off a bridge hit number one on trending.

I clicked it. It was Iris in her pajamas, crying outside the railing of the bridge.

“I ruined my sister’s wedding. I’m a horrible person.”

Before she finished, Adrian grabbed her wrist and yanked her into his arms.

Iris was shaking with fear. Adrian took off his suit jacket and wrapped it around her.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

But Iris’s eyes were still fixed on the water.

Her comfort object—the one she’d slept with since she was little—was floating on the surface, drifting away.

She turned back, her tear-filled eyes reflected in Adrian’s.

“Adrian, go back and have the ceremony with Elara… It’s just my lovey. It doesn’t matter.”

Adrian stroked her head and told her not to worry.

Without hesitation, he went into the water to get it.

In that moment, I turned off my phone.

I didn’t want to see the white suit I’d spent half a year designing for Adrian soaking in the river.

Half an hour later, Adrian called me. I declined it.

He texted me. [Elara, without that security blanket, she won’t be able to sleep.]

[Let’s pick another good day and hold an even bigger wedding, okay?]

I almost laughed. It was ridiculous.

I thought about the months we’d spent preparing for the wedding, right when I was in the middle of a promotion competition.

I’d barely slept at night. Even when I did, I’d wake up if I turned over.

I’d finally made it to our wedding day, but in Adrian’s eyes, it still wasn’t as important as Iris getting a good night’s sleep.

I didn’t reply to Adrian. Instead, I booked a flight to New York City.

Because of the wedding, my company had given me time off and allowed me to join the project team three days late.

But now, I didn’t need it.
