I remained silent for a long moment.
I simply watched him, unable to understand why he was here.
When I finally looked up, my voice was calm.
“Ethan, what are you doing here? I can’t imagine what could’ve brought you here.”
“And I definitely don’t believe you came all this way to see me.”
His expression stiffened. The words seemed to catch in his throat.
When he finally spoke, his voice was low.
“Nora, I can explain everything that happened.”
I shook my head.
“But I don’t need an explanation. I’m starting a new life.”
“A life where I don’t have to wear my hair in a bowl cut, where I can wear makeup and beautiful clothes.”
Ethan lowered his head.
“I’m sorry for everything I did, but there are still some things I need to tell you.”
“I only made that so–called bet with Chloe after you and I had already gotten together.”
“And I wasn’t the one who liked that comment under her post. Chloe had my phone at the time.”
“Back then, I thought I was deeply in love with Chloe, so I kept forcing you to give in to me.”
“I took a beautiful woman who loved dressing up and made her look as plain as possible, right up until our
three years were over.”
“Only when Chloe asked me to get back together with her did I finally understand my own feelings.”
He looked down at me, his expression earnest.
“I didn’t agree to get back together with her. You’re the only person I want to be with.”
“All I could think about was how scared you were to sleep alone at night. I never wanted to leave you.”
After hearing all of that, I felt absolutely nothing.
My voice was quiet.
“I’m not afraid of being alone anymore, so I really don’t need you now.”
I paused before adding, “Ethan, go home.”
His eyes filled with pain.
He seemed unable to believe that the woman who had always given in to him could reject him so firmly.
His eyes grew red as he murmured, “Nora, don’t push me away. Please give me one more chance.”
“If you don’t want to go back, I’ll stay here with you until you agree to come home with me.”
I scoffed.
Even now, he still thought he could win me over.
He thought that if he waited long enough, I would eventually soften and give in, just as I always had before.
He was wrong.
I would never make the same mistake again.
I shook my head, unwilling to say anything more.
Just then, Sophie walked over.
Without acknowledging the tension, she calmly handed me a file.
“Nora, these are the competition materials. The company has decided to submit your design, so read through them carefully.”
I stared at her in surprise, unable to react for a moment.
Sophie smiled.
“The design team voted unanimously to submit your work.”
“Everyone believes in you and your design. You’re going to be an incredible designer.”
She patted me on the shoulder and walked away.
That left Ethan staring at me with a conflicted expression.
After a long silence, he said quietly, “I’m sorry. I never knew how talented you were.”
“I was the one who held you back.”
He paused. When he looked up again, determination filled his eyes.
“But I still don’t want to give up on you. I’m willing to stay here and wait as long as it takes.”
“If you come back to me, I’ll support your work no matter what.”
I ignored him, turned around, and walked away.
He followed close behind me the whole way.
