My Best Friend’s Brother is My Ex Chapter 09
Soren showing up out of nowhere stopped meÂ
cold.Â
I just sat there, staring at him.Â
The lighting carved his sharp profile intoÂ
something almost cruel in its perfection.Â
Everyone held their breath.Â
By the time I snapped out of it, he was already beside me, like he’d always belonged there.Â
His long fingers reached for the bottle and poured.Â
“So, how many drinks was she supposed toÂ
have?”Â
“E–eight,” a girl stammered, flushed crimson.Â
Soren didn’t even glance at her.Â
He just tipped his head back and downed glass after glass.Â
All eight.Â
Then he grabbed my wrist and pulled me up.Â
“Excuse us. I need her for a bit.”Â
“Carry on.”Â
I was still dazed when we got into his car.Â
I scrambled for an excuse.Â
“Mr. S–Soren, my friends-”Â
He let out a cold, humorless laugh.Â
My choice of address had clearly struck a nerve.Â
“Mila Hart.”Â
His voice sharpened, ice and accusation.Â
“I used to have a girlfriend who was severelyÂ
alcohol intolerant.”Â
“You think that’s a coincidence?”Â
My mind went blank.Â
Staring at his face this close, I couldn’t get a singleÂ
word out.Â
Couldn’t even hold his gaze.Â
Clinging to that last shred of hope, I tried anyway.Â
“Actually, a lot of people are allergic to alcohol. AtÂ
my school-”Â
He moved before I could finish.Â
He had me pinned against the seat.Â
The space shrank to nothing.Â
His breath mixed with mine.Â
Heat flooded my cheeks.Â
He studied me for a long moment.Â
Then he spoke through gritted teeth.Â
“Mila Hart. Twenty–two. Fresh out of college.”Â
He enunciated every word, watching my reaction.Â
Each syllable landed like a blow.Â
I went pale.Â
“Even after you ghosted me, I believed everything you told me.”Â
“No wonder I couldn’t find you, no matter how hardÂ
I looked.”Â
“Who would’ve thought? My ‘girlfriend‘ was still inÂ
high school.”Â
“Everything you gave me was a lie.”Â
“Was it fun? Playing me like that?”Â
He was breathing hard, fury barely leashed.Â
His face was terrifyingly dark.Â
I closed my eyes in defeat.Â
There was no escaping it now.Â
No defense left.Â
I forced myself to ask, “How… how did you figureÂ
out I was Mila Hart?”Â
“Think about it.”Â
He let out a bitter, mocking laugh.Â
In those pitch–black eyes, I saw betrayal.Â
“We were together for months. I didn’t know yourÂ
face–fine.”Â
“But you think I don’t recognize your voice?”Â
“I suspected it the second you walked into myÂ
house.”Â
“Nothing matched, but I trusted my gut.”Â
His hand caught my chin, tilting my face up to his.Â
And maybe it was just my imagination, but behindÂ
all that anger…Â
There was something else.Â
Helplessness. Disappointment.Â
Maybe even… hurt?Â
“Mila Hart,” he said softly.Â
“You really underestimated how much I loved you.”
