The air punched out of his lungs.
A baby.
She was pregnant.
He was going to be a father.
A jagged mix of pure awe and a sickening drop in his stomach twisted his expression.
Last night. When he’d ordered her into the basement, she had tried to tell him. She said it was too damp. She’d started to say something about the baby.
That’s what she was trying to say.
The realization barely had time to take root before Ms. Jenkins rushed forward and grabbed his arm, completely frantic.
“Sir! If your wife is pregnant, then what I saw last night…”
Julian went still. “What do you mean?”
“Last night, when I went down… I lied! The door wasn’t locked! I opened it and saw blood. On her legs… pooling on the floor. There was so much of it…”
“I panicked. That’s when I screamed for you. But you were upstairs with Miss Mercer, and you told me to keep quiet…”
The last bit of color drained from Julian’s face.
He seized Ms. Jenkins by the shoulders. “Why didn’t you tell me?!”
Ms. Jenkins was shaking, tears running down her face.
“But sir, you said… you told us not to mention your wife in front of Miss Mercer. You said it could trigger a setback… And I… I was terrified of losing my job! I thought if you didn’t care enough to come down, maybe I shouldn’t interfere… So I pulled the door shut and left her there!”
“I was going to tell you this morning, but you were still sleeping, and the second you zoo people showed up, and I… I panicked! I didn’t know how to tell you!”
