The handler was already speaking quickly.
“No need to panic, sir. We just need to sweep your yard and the outside of the house. Standard safety check.”
A vein ticked in Julian’s temple.
He turned and went upstairs without a word.
Chloe was already up, hugging a pillow to her chest in bed. She reached for him the second he walked in. “Julian, it’s so noisy out there. What’s going on?”
Julian sat down beside her.
He steadied her by the shoulders.
“It’s nothing. A snake got loose from the zoo down the road, and they’re checking the area. Stay in the room and keep the door locked.”
“A snake?” Chloe’s eyes went wide, and she burrowed into his chest. “Chloe’s scared! Don’t go…”
“I’m just going to check downstairs. I’ll be right back.”
Julian eased her off him and tucked her back under the covers.
“Stay here for me, okay? I’ll be right back up.”
Chloe pouted but nodded.
Julian strode out and met the crew at the front door.
“Search everything. Every inch.”
“The yard, the garage. Don’t miss a single corner.”
The crew swept the perimeter, combing through the yard, along the property line, and inside the tool shed. Nothing.
“Sorry for the trouble. The footage might’ve been misleading. It could’ve
gone
another way.”
The lead handler held out a business card. “If you see any sign of it, call us right away.”
Julian shut the door and leaned back against it, letting himself breathe for a second.
The knot in his chest loosened, just slightly.
He walked into the kitchen and poured himself a glass of water.
Halfway through the first sip, a thought struck him. He looked over at Ms. Jenkins, who was wiping down the stove.
“Did you take my wife anything to eat?”
Ms. Jenkins’s hands went still. “Sir, your wife, she…”
