The Wrong Baby Chapter 05
Just as I was about to step outside, he grabbed my shoulders tightly.
“Selene, stop making a scene, okay? I already checked Nico. He’s gone.
“Let’s bury him and pretend none of this ever happened, all right?”
I pushed him away without expression.
But in the next second, my pupils shrank.
The spot where the pup had been lying was now empty.
I grabbed Damien by the collar and demanded, “Where is the pup? What did you do with him?”
Enforcer sirens sounded outside the territory gate.
Two enforcers walked into the clearing and asked, “Who called the Council?”
Damien clamped a hand over my mouth and forced out a smile.
“Enforcers, my mate made a mistake. No one called.”
The Luna and Seraphine hurried downstairs too.
The Luna pointed at me and snapped, “She’s crazy. It was just an argument between mates, but she wants to call the enforcers over every little pack issue.”
The enforcers looked doubtful, but they seemed to think it was just a domestic dispute.
They took a brief statement and left.
Only after they were completely gone did Damien finally let go of me.
“Selene, do you think I’m not devastated that the pup is dead?
“But if you insist on making this public, how is Raven supposed to face her classmates afterward? And what will people think of our pack?”
I wiped the cold tears from my face.
“Is any of that worth more than a life?”
I looked around, searching for the pup.
But he was nowhere to be found.
I searched every corner of the longhouse, but I couldn’t find the child who had died.
Then my gaze landed on the cellar.
The cellar was where the pack stored smoked meat and pickled vegetables for winter. It had a dirt floor and a low ceiling, and water often seeped in after the snow melted.
When Seraphine saw me heading toward it, she quickly grabbed me.
“The cellar door is broken. Go somewhere else.”
I shook her off coldly and walked toward the cellar.
A foul stench hit me in the face.
Then I saw a corner of the bright red baby blanket in there.
My whole body shook. My wolf tore at my chest.
A furious, broken howl tore from my throat.
“Are you people even wolves?”
