Her Joke Cost Him Everything Chapter 05

Her Joke Cost Him Everything Chapter 05

Jacob looked like he’d been struck with a lead pipe. His lips were trembling, the blood completely

drained from his face.

I watched him crumble, feeling a surge of dark, cruel satisfaction.

In my last life, I knelt on the floor and shredded my dignity just to give his mother a fighting chance.

In this life, the man who personally signed her death warrant was Jacob himself.

The lead surgeon sighed, his voice heavy with finality.

“The donor cells were completely non–viable due to repeated exposure and lack of temperature

control.”

“The patient suffered severe complications during the procedure, and resuscitation efforts failed.

Mr. Harrison’s coffee cup hit the floor, shattering into jagged pieces.

He snapped his head toward me, his eyes cutting like serrated blades. “What happened? You were the one in charge of the transport!”

Before I could breathe a word, Sloane was already sobbing into her hands, the tears flowing on

command.

“Carey didn’t mean it! She insisted on using the cryo–cooler to chill her sodas, and we couldn’t stop her! Mr. Harrison, please, please don’t be too upset…”

She ducked behind Jacob, playing the part of the traumatized witness to perfection.

The hatred in Mr. Harrison’s eyes was absolute. There was no trace of the kind, fatherly figure he had pretended to be for years.

“You useless bitch! I pay your hospital a fortune, and you can’t even deliver a single box of marrow!”

“If it weren’t for your negligence, my wife would still be alive!”

“Call the police! I want her behind bars! I want her to pay for my wife’s life with her own!”

Every pair of eyes in the hallway pinned me to the spot.

Some of my colleagues tried to defend me, whispering, “There has to be a mistake. Dr. Carey isn’t

like that.”

Jacob’s throat worked as if he wanted to speak, but he kept his mouth shut, allowing his father to drown me in insults.

It was almost funny.

In my last life, I died because I saved her.

In this life, I followed Jacob’s orders to the letter, and they still wanted to drag me through the mud.

The sound of hurried footsteps echoed from the end of the hall.

Police officers approached, flanked by the hospital board members.

The moment Mr. Harrison saw the uniforms, he pointed a shaking finger at me and roared.

“That’s her! She murdered my wife! Arrest her now!”

I looked up and let out a faint, cold smile.

Why the rush?

We’re going to settle this debt, item by item.

“Officers, it’s her!” Sloane cut in, her eyes red and puffy, acting the part of the heartbroken ward.

“That priceless marrow spoiled right in her hands. She’s the reason Mrs. Harrison is dead.”

To her surprise, the lead officer stepped right past her.

“Sloane? We received a report regarding a passenger who made a false bomb threat on a flight

today.”

Sloane panicked, cutting him off instantly.

“No, officer! I saw Carey acting so suspicious that genuinely thought the cooler was a threat!”

“I was just worried about federal aviation safety! I think Carey ruined the cells on purpose and set me up!”

A dead silence fell over the corridor.

The Hospital Chief frowned at me, waiting for an explanation.

I didn’t argue. I didn’t cry. I simply reached up and unpinned the small brooch from my lapel

It wasn’t jewelry. It was a high–definition body camera.

“I have a recording of the entire trip.”
