He Sent an Intern to Meet His Parents, I Sent Him a Wedding Invitation Chapter 04
The day before I left, I still had some documents to hand over to a colleague.
But the moment I walked into the office, Jenny was standing in front of me wearing a Director’s badge.
“Oh, Megan, you’re here? Good. I need some documents printed. Two copies of each. Leave them on my desk.”
“You know where that is, right? It’s your old spot.”
I looked at the stack of papers that came up to my chest. “I’m here to drop something off, not to work.”
“Megan,” Jenny said with a smile. “Mr. Hastings already made it clear. I’m the Director now. You haven’t forgotten, have you?”
“I’m on vacation.”
“I haven’t approved it.” She crossed her arms, as if she’d been in charge forever.
“Vacation requests need sign off from your direct supervisor. Did you even submit one?”
I looked her up and down. “I need to submit a request to you?”
She frowned.
I laughed once, ignored the papers, and turned to leave.
“Megan Hartley.”
Brandon had seen the whole thing from the executive office.
Jenny looked at him and immediately picked up the huge stack of files. “It’s fine, Mr. Hastings. Megan used to be my boss. I can’t expect her to do the printing. I’ll do it myself.”
The stack came up to her chest. The moment she lifted it, she winced in pain.
Brandon said coldly, “If she’s too good to do it, then are you, as Director, too good to do it as well?”
I felt a pang of irritation.
Jenny rushed to say, “It’s okay, Mr. Hastings. I’ll handle it… Ah!”
She stumbled and fell, files scattering everywhere.
Brandon caught her arm. “Careful!”
“I’m fine, really, Mr. Hastings…” Jenny clutched her ankle. Her eyes reddened as she looked at me.
Brandon frowned. “Megan, you’re not Director anymore. Take that attitude elsewhere. If you don’t want to work, that’s fine.”
He looked at me. “Go to accounting and collect your severance. The company doesn’t need you anymore.”
Everyone watched. I looked at him, slightly surprised.
“Go on,” Brandon said calmly.
I hesitated. Then I didn’t argue.
After all, he was saving me the trouble of submitting a resignation letter.
“Thank you for that, Mr. Hastings.” I turned and walked out.
He frowned.
When I got outside, he sent me a message.
[Don’t worry. I won’t let them actually fire you.]
[Jenny just got promoted and people are already questioning her authority. You embarrassed her in front of everyone. I had to do something.]
[When you get back from your trip with Chloe, I’ll promote you to Vice President. And…]
He sent a photo, a pair of diamond engagement rings. On the inside of the bands, our initials were engraved.
[I’ll announce our relationship.]
I didn’t reply.
The day I left, I ran into Brandon at the airport. He was with Jenny, and I was alone.
My match and I were flying from our respective cities and meeting at Lake Tahoe.
“Wait here,” Brandon said to Jenny, then walked over to me.
“You’re traveling alone?”
“We’re meeting at Lake Tahoe.”
He looked me up and down, then put his jacket over my shoulders. “Don’t worry, there are other people on this trip. It’s not just the two of us.”
I nodded. “Okay.”
“Megan.” He hesitated. “Be careful on your own. Call me if anything happens.”
“Thanks.”
“When you get back, it’ll be our ten-year anniversary.” He looked at me. “Let’s get engaged that day.”
I thought for a moment and smiled. “That really is a good day to get married.”
He smiled too. “Two happy occasions at once.”
“Yeah.”
Our flights were taking off at the same time, his with Jenny, and mine alone.
We walked toward different gates.
Brandon waved at me. “See you when you get back.”
I nodded.
I didn’t tell him that I was marrying someone else.
