The Bride They Rejected Owned Half Their Empire Chapter 05
“Elowen, what on earth are you talking about?”Â
Seraphina’s voice rose half an octave in obviousÂ
panic.Â
I ignored her fake confusion entirely.Â
I opened my phone, enlarged the screenshot, andÂ
held the screen out for everyone in the room toÂ
see clearly.Â
“Rowan Sloane, contact marked with a heartÂ
emoji.”Â
“Text sent fifteen minutes ago: Babe, don’t panic. about the baby situation. I’ll handle everything.”Â
I turned to lock eyes with Kael.Â
“This message came directly from Seraphina’s personal phone.”Â
A deathly silence settled over the room.Â
Kael’s gaze shifted from my phone screen straight to Seraphina’s pale face.Â
“Seraphina?”Â
“Kael!” She instantly burst into fake tears, grabbing tightly onto his sleeve.Â
“She edited this photo! It’s fake! She’s just trying toÂ
tear us apart!”Â
“Edited photo?” I set my phone down on the tableÂ
calmly.Â
“Your phone slipped and fell right here in thisÂ
room. You can unlock it yourself and let everyoneÂ
check your full chat history.”Â
Seraphina’s face drained of all color.Â
Her eyes darted frantically across the floor andÂ
table corners, searching for her missing device.Â
I stated the truth plainly for her.Â
“Your phone slid behind the cabinet by the door.Â
when you left the room.”Â
Kael walked over slowly, bending down to retrieveÂ
the pink–cased cellphone from behind theÂ
furniture.Â
“Kael, that’s my private phone–you can’t goÂ
through my personal messages!”Â
He ignored her protests completely.Â
His fingerprint failed to unlock the device. He liftedÂ
his head sharply.Â
“Tell me the passcode.”Â
Seraphina bit her lower lip tightly.Â
“I won’t.”Â
“Tell me the passcode now.”Â
“Kael, please trust me. This is all a setup sheÂ
planned to ruin us!”Â
“If you’re truly innocent, what do you have to hide?”Â
The room fell tense again.Â
Alden’s expression darkened drastically. HeÂ
frowned firmly at Seraphina.Â
“Seraphina, give him the passcode. If you haveÂ
nothing to hide, there’s no reason to refuse.”Â
Marigold tugged Alden’s arm urgently, signaling him to stop pushing the matter.Â
But Alden’s frown only deepened further.Â
“Seraphina.” His tone turned stern and unyielding.Â
“Give him the passcode.”Â
“Dad!”Â
“You’re all ganging up to bully me!” She suddenlyÂ
dropped to the floor, covering her face andÂ
breaking into loud sobs.Â
“What have I ever done to deserve this unfairÂ
treatment?”Â
It was her usual go–to move.Â
Whenever she was cornered with no way out, sheÂ
cried and played the victim.Â
She’d used this trick countless times growing upÂ
in the Voss household. Every tear always softenedÂ
Alden’s heart instantly.Â
I glanced over at Alden, and sure enough, hisÂ
harsh expression was already wavering withÂ
sympathy.Â
“Enough of this. It’s just a vague text message-Â
it’s probably just a misunderstanding anyway.” HeÂ
mumbled weakly.Â
“Alden.” I spoke up sharply.Â
“You slapped me and called me disruptive for standing by a legal contract.”Â
“Now your own daughter refuses to let anyoneÂ
check her phone to clear her name. Who’s really causing trouble here?”Â
He opened his mouth to argue, but no words cameÂ
out.Â
Kael stood frozen in place, still clutchingÂ
Seraphina’s phone in his hand. He stared at her inÂ
silence for a long moment before turning to theÂ
security guards behind him.Â
“Send for Jax from our tech team immediately.”Â
Seraphina’s crying cut off instantly.Â
“Kael, don’t!”Â
“If you won’t give the passcode willingly, I’ll have our tech specialist unlock it for you.” His voice was calm yet ice–cold, far more intimidating than any shout.Â
“If you’re truly innocent, what are you so afraid of?”Â
Ten minutes later.Â
A young man with black–rimmed glasses walked in carrying a laptop, sitting down at the table and connecting Seraphina’s phone with a data cable.Â
Throughout the unlocking process, Seraphina tried three separate times to rush forward and snatch her phone away, only to be held back by theÂ
guards each time.Â
The phone screen finally lit up fully unlocked.Â
Jax opened the messaging app and searched forÂ
the contact marked with the heart emoji.Â
He pulled up the entire chat log between Seraphina and Rowan Sloane.Â
I didn’t need to read a single line of theÂ
conversation.Â
The look on Kael’s face told me everything IÂ
needed to know.Â
He scrolled slowly upward through the messages,Â
his movements deliberate and rigid.Â
When he reached a certain message, his thumbÂ
froze completely still.Â
He stayed silent for ten long seconds.Â
Then he locked the phone screen shut.Â
“Everyone leave the room.” His voice soundedÂ
distant and hollow.Â
“Kael?” Brianna called out tentatively.Â
“I said everyone OUT.”Â
Brianna shot him a worried glance before leadingÂ
all the guests and family members out of theÂ
parlor.Â
Marigold pulled Alden along as they left. AldenÂ
paused to cast one last disappointed look atÂ
Seraphina before walking out.Â
The door closed firmly, leaving only three of usÂ
inside: me, Kael, and Seraphina.Â
Kael stood with his back turned to us.Â
His shoulders were rigid and unmoving, but I couldÂ
see he’d already cracked the edge of his phoneÂ
case from squeezing it too tightly.Â
“This conversation started three months ago.”Â
He finally spoke, his voice low and broken.Â
“For three months, you lied to me every night,Â
saying you were stuck working overtime at theÂ
office.”Â
Seraphina’s voice came out small and trembling.Â
“Kael, I can explain everything.”Â
“Rowan Sloane–son of Warren Sloane, head of theÂ
Sloane Group.” He slowly turned around to faceÂ
her, his eyes cold as ice.Â
“He’s our biggest bidding rival in the real estateÂ
market. What exactly is your relationship withÂ
him?”Â
Tears streamed down Seraphina’s face freely now.Â
“He’s just a close family friend, nothing more.”Â
“A friend?” Kael’s tone turned sharp and mocking.Â
“What exactly is the baby he mentioned in hisÂ
text?”Â
“I have no idea. That message wasn’t referring toÂ
me–you’re misunderstanding everything!”Â
“Seraphina.” He stepped directly in front of herÂ
holding the phone screen up to her face.Â
“Read the forty–seventh message from the top outÂ
loud.”Â
Seraphina’s body went completely rigid with panic.Â
I had no way of seeing what the message said-Â
but the horrified look on her face said it all.Â
Kael slammed the phone down hard onto theÂ
table.Â
He turned to face me, his expression twisted withÂ
a tangled mess of regret, anger, and shock.Â
“What exactly are you demanding regarding theÂ
covenant’s breach compensation clause?
