He Married My Best Friend, Then Lost Me Forever Chapter 08
“It’s the same reason I’m marrying her now. HerÂ
father was badly injured during an exercise andÂ
urgently needed money for surgery, but Sophia isÂ
too proud to accept help outright. That’s why IÂ
thought of folding the money into the wedding.Â
fund.”Â
“Lily, Sophia isn’t just my friend. She served besideÂ
you, and she’s your best friend. Was I wrong toÂ
help her?”Â
He did not understand what he had done wrong.Â
He did not understand why I was angry.Â
Listening to the resentment in his words, I couldÂ
not hold back a laugh.Â
“So according to you, if I want to help someone, IÂ
can go be his girlfriend, marry him, and becomeÂ
his wife?”Â
Zachary’s expression froze, and he scolded meÂ
under his breath. “What nonsense are you talkingÂ
about? Marriage is sacred. It isn’t something yourÂ
joke about.”Â
“What about you?”Â
“Were you sincere, or were you treating it like aÂ
joke?”Â
I stared straight at him, my eyes full of mockery.Â
“Zachary, before you lecture me, ask yourselfÂ
whether you have any right to say those words.”Â
With that, I pushed past him and walked out of theÂ
private lounge.Â
Caleb had not left yet.Â
He stood obediently beside my mother, following her instructions as he said goodbye to each guestÂ
who left.Â
“What took you so long just to get your bag? I thought you got lost.”Â
My mother shot me an annoyed look.Â
Caleb took my bag from me as if it were the most natural thing in the world.Â
“It’s normal for women to touch up their makeup after dinner. A little delay is nothing.”Â
My mother nodded in satisfaction and deliberately teased him. “Look at you. I barely said one thing to her, and you’re already defending her.”Â
Then her face turned serious again as she lookedÂ
at me.Â
“Lillian, I don’t care why you two fought. You had no right to say he was killed in the line of duty. These past two days, I really thought something had happened to him, and I was afraid you might hurt yourself.”Â
Caleb smiled at me and said nothing.Â
Thinking about everything that had happened over the past few days, my throat tightened. After a long while, I finally said, “I know.”Â
Normally, after a wedding, the couple would leave for their honeymoon.Â
Sophia had made plans for it.Â
The day before the wedding, she had posted. photos of Cape Cod on her Instagram Story, saying that was where she wanted to go.Â
But Zachary no longer followed her plans.Â
On his wedding night, he did not go back to the home he was supposed to share with Sophia.Â
Instead, he knocked on my family’s door.Â
My mother looked at him in confusion when sheÂ
saw him standing there. “Zachary? Tonight is yourÂ
wedding night. Why are you here?”Â
“Mrs. Miller, I need to talk to Lily. Could you call herÂ
for me?”Â
On his way over, he had called me countlessÂ
times.Â
Each call went straight to an automated message.Â
That was when he realized I had blocked hisÂ
number.Â
He tried texting me too.Â
But his texts never showed as Delivered.Â
At that moment, for the first time, he understoodÂ
what it meant to feel helpless and uneasy.Â
“What do you need Lily for?”Â
Before my mother could say anything else, CalebÂ
strolled unhurriedly into the entryway and lookedÂ
at Zachary with a half–smile.Â
“Why are you here?”Â
Zachary’s eyes flickered violently, and the unease inside him deepened.Â
Caleb smiled faintly.Â
“I was going to get a hotel, but Mom said thereÂ
was an empty room here. Since I’d already come home, there was no need to go back out.”Â
“What the hell did you just say?”Â
Zachary’s eyes went red with rage. He lungedÂ
forward, grabbed Caleb by the collar, and said,Â
“Caleb, say that again if you have the guts.”Â
Facing Zachary’s fury, Caleb showed no fear at all.Â
He smiled and said, “I said, Mom told me…”Â
Before he could finish, a heavy punch landed onÂ
his face.
