He Married My Best Friend, Then Lost Me Forever Chapter 07
By the time I changed clothes and found myÂ
mother, she had already introduced Caleb toÂ
everyone.Â
“That’s right. My future son–in–law is wonderful. HeÂ
sends me gifts every major holiday. He’s just been.Â
too busy with the Army. They’ve been together for five years, and today is the first time I’ve finallyÂ
met him.”Â
Hearing that, my steps faltered.Â
Caleb’s gaze grew heavier, and a guilty, apologetic look crossed his face. “I’m sorry. From now on, no matter how demanding my duties are, I’ll come back with Lily to visit you.”Â
My mother beamed, completely won over by hisÂ
words.Â
Then she turned to Sophia’s mother and showed him off. “See? I told you our Lily had good taste. Caleb is every bit as good as Zachary.”Â
The moment those words landed, Zachary, who had come by the table for a toast, looked utterly thunderous.Â
His fingers tightened around his glass until hisÂ
knuckles turned pale, and his gaze hardened with anger when he looked at me.Â
Seeing that, Sophia quickly changed the subject.Â
“Thank you all for taking time out of your busyÂ
schedules to attend our wedding.”Â
Zachary wore a stormy expression the entire timeÂ
and said nothing.Â
His gaze stayed locked on Caleb and me.Â
I could clearly feel the heat of his stare on me.Â
But I did not turn back to look at him.Â
Caleb acted as if he did not see them either.Â
Calmly and unhurriedly, he kept placing food onÂ
both my plate and my mother’s.Â
When the wedding finally ended, I went to theÂ
private lounge to get my bag before leaving.Â
Zachary suddenly appeared and grabbed myÂ
wrist.Â
“Lillian, what is going on with you and him?”Â
He seemed truly furious, and he did not hold backÂ
his strength at all.Â
Pain shot through my wrist.Â
I sucked in a sharp breath.Â
But I did not pull away.Â
“What happens between me and him has nothingÂ
to do with you.”Â
“Nothing to do with me?” He let out an angry laugh. “Lillian, have you forgotten what we are toÂ
each other?”Â
I laughed too, but only because it was ridiculous.Â
“We served together.”Â
His expression shifted, hardening into somethingÂ
ugly.Â
“That’s all.”Â
The moment I said those words, his grip on myÂ
wrist tightened even more.Â
“We served together? That’s all? Lillian, have yourÂ
forgotten the five years we were together?”Â
I yanked my hand free and took a step back.Â
“When did I ever date you?”Â
“Zachary, your girlfriend is Sophia Brooks. YourÂ
wife is Sophia Brooks too.”Â
“Lillian!”Â
Zachary was furious.Â
There was no trace of his usual smile left on hisÂ
hostile expression.Â
“How many times do I have to tell you? I was only doing her a favor. Other than that, there’s nothingÂ
between us!”Â
“Really? Then why did you go home with her as herÂ
boyfriend? Why did you let everyone know aboutÂ
your relationship?”Â
“Zachary, during the five years we were together, IÂ
asked you countless times to come home with meÂ
and meet my parents. Did you ever say yes?”Â
I had not wanted to bring any of this up again.Â
But he insisted on dragging the ugliness out intoÂ
the open.Â
“You lied to me and said you had an exercise, thenÂ
went home with Sophia to see her family. WhenÂ
you were at her house and introduced yourself as her boyfriend, did you ever remember that I wasÂ
your girlfriend?”Â
“Sophia is shy. Her family was pressuring her, andÂ
she wanted someone to pretend to be herÂ
boyfriend so she could get them off her back. IÂ
was the only man she knew well enough to ask, soÂ
I helped her!”Â
Swallowing his anger, Zachary humbled himselfÂ
enough to explain.Â
