My Best Friend Stole an Heir, So I Cleared House as the Lawful Wife Chapter 03

Before I could finish, Nicholas slapped the phone out of my hand. It hit the floor and the screen shattered. His anger came so close I could feel his breath on my face.

“What testing? My grandson is perfectly healthy. How can you be this vicious? You’re cursing a newborn.”

A shard from the broken screen sliced the back of my hand. Pain spread through my skin, sharp and numb at the same time. I raised my head and looked at him.

“When Dr. Miles finishes the examination, you’ll understand what I mean.”

Nicholas stared at me, his eyes dark.

“Fine. Let’s see what trick you still have left. If nothing is wrong with this child, I won’t spare you.”

Half an hour later, Dr. Miles entered the chapel with two assistants. He looked tense enough to know something was already wrong. I stared at the baby in Vera’s arms.

“Full examination,” I said. “Head to toe. Check everything.”

Donna Serena grabbed the doctor’s hand.

“Miles, his heart and lungs are fine, right? Tell me they’re fine.”

Dr. Miles did not answer. He took the baby. His assistants set up the portable equipment. Around us, no one dared to breathe too loudly. A few minutes later, Dr. Miles removed his stethoscope.

“The child’s heart and lung function are stable for now. There is no obvious damage.”

Vera relaxed, then put on the face of a woman who had suffered endless injustice.

“I told you,” she said. “During my pregnancy, I even went to a wellness center in Nevada for a family therapy method passed down for three generations. For three hundred days, I drank the alkaline herbal water and mineral powder Don Vito arranged for me. He cared so much about this child that he had the kitchen watch my diet every day.”

Donna Serena pressed a hand to her chest and let out a heavy breath. Nicholas glared at me. Then he slapped me across the face. My ears rang from the blow.

“Olivia, I’ve been polite because you were the Moretti Donna for three years,” he said. “Don’t push your luck. My grandson is healthy. Curse him again, and the Morettis will not show you mercy.”

He threw a divorce agreement at my feet.

“Sign it. Then get out of my compound before I have the soldiers drag you out.”

My cheek burned, but that pain was nothing compared to the cold spreading through my chest.

“I won’t sign,” I said. “Not unless we run another DNA test.”

Donna Serena exploded.

“You lunatic. Those are Damian’s eyes. Damian’s nose. You think I can’t recognize my own son?”

Vera rushed forward and clamped both hands on my shoulders.

“You think I forged the report?” she hissed. “You think everyone is as filthy as you? You think every woman sneaks into the Family with a pretty face? Fine. Then I’ll make sure you understand exactly how badly you’ve lost.”

She turned to Dr. Miles.

“It’s just a DNA test, right? Do it now.”

Then she glared at me. There was something venomous behind her eyes, like a snake coiled in the dark.

“If the result proves Noah is Damian’s son, Olivia, you will end the pregnancy, sign the divorce agreement, and leave the Moretti family forever.”

Nicholas, Donna Serena, and Camilla said nothing. My cheek still burned. The last warmth in my chest went out. If I backed down now, Damian would lose his wife without even knowing what happened. He would also gain a son who could never inherit the estate. Before I could answer, Camilla grabbed me with disgust on her face and dragged me toward the temporary medical room.

“I want to see what you can say after this.”

Dr. Miles read the room and collected the samples without arguing. Soon, the toothbrush Damian kept in the compound was brought over as well. While we waited, the room went silent. Damian’s elders sat in a row, their faces dark, their eyes fixed on me. I was not the Donna of the Moretti family anymore. Not to them. I was a traitor who had broken omerta. These were the people who had once called me family. Now they looked at me like an enemy. An old Moretti aunt narrowed her eyes.

“When the result comes out, let’s see how long she can keep acting.”

At last, the testing machine gave a cold beep. Report after report printed out. The sound scraped through the room. The top line was clear.

“The test results support a biological parent-child relationship between Noah Moretti and Damian Moretti.”

Donna Serena rushed forward first. She snatched the report from Dr. Miles and burst into laughter.

“See? This is my real grandson.”

She raised the report in front of everyone’s face. Nicholas was so pleased he could not stop smiling. He held the baby and rocked him again and again. Camilla snorted, grabbed my wrist, and tried to shove me into a car.

“Today, I’ll watch you deal with that problem in your belly myself,” she said. “Then no one can use it to threaten the Family again.”

“Wait.”

I fought with everything I had. This was the child I had prayed for over three years. I had finally gotten pregnant. I would never let anything happen to my baby. The Moretti family’s cold faces flashed before my eyes. Their hateful words filled my ears.

“If she dares insult the woman who gave the Morettis their bloodline, she should pay for it with her child.”

I twisted my wrist hard, trying to break free from Camilla’s grip.

“Her child isn’t what you think.”

I opened my mouth and bit down hard on Camilla’s arm. Then I turned and screamed at Dr. Miles.

“The DNA report. Dr. Miles, look at the line under the result.”

“Stop wasting your strength,” Vera said.

She kicked me from behind.

“You’re not keeping that child today. You’re not keeping the Donna seat either.”

My eye socket hit the edge of the car window. My vision blurred. I could not care about the pain. I could only look at my last lifeline. Dr. Miles met my eyes. He saw the despair there. He saw the hope too. For a second, he froze. Then he bent down and picked up the DNA report from the floor. The moment he read the full page, his breathing changed. He rushed over like a man possessed.

“Wait. Stop right now. Donna Olivia’s child cannot be touched.”

The car had already started. He ran to the front and pounded on the window.

“That child is the final hope in Don Vito’s will. No one is taking Donna Olivia anywhere.”

The car stopped. Nicholas looked impatient.

“Miles, you ran the test yourself. What else could be wrong? Noah is the only heir left in Damian’s direct line.”

Dr. Miles swallowed and handed him the report.

“You should finish reading it before you make any decision.”

Nicholas snatched it from him. Then his eyes went wide.
