She Wanted Everyone to Remember Her Birthday, So I Let Them Remember It Forever Chapter 02

I was so angry I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.

“She does something stupid, and you want me to pay money to make her feel better? Chad, what exactly is she to you?”

Chad hesitated for a fraction of a second before roaring back. “We’re all going to be neighbors! Do you seriously have to make things this ugly?”

“Neighbors? I seriously doubt that.”

I hung up on him and immediately blocked his number.

Less than half a minute later, my phone rang again. It was the property manager, Mr. Rollins.

His tone was incredibly condescending. “Miss Lane, as the owner of the penthouse suite, you should be supporting our handover event.”

“Miss Hastings has a massive following, and it’s a great thing that she’s willing to promote our community. Why are you targeting her out of petty jealousy?”

Jealousy?

I was completely baffled.

“Jealous of what? Jealous that she has a few screws loose? Or jealous that you’re all running around playing her little games along with her?”

Mr. Rollins’ tone turned stern. “It’s just a temporary test code. There’s no need to be dramatic. Your behavior is reflecting poorly on the entire community. I’m ordering you to apologize to Miss Hastings right now!”

The viewer count on Ophelia’s live stream was climbing rapidly, meaning more and more strangers now knew the master code to the entire building.

Watching the disaster unfold, I let out a sharp laugh. “Fine. Just wait, I’ll apologize right now.”

I hung up immediately, and the living room fell dead silent.

But less than ten minutes later, someone began violently pounding on my door. Chad stood outside, his face completely pale with rage.

Next to him, Ophelia sniffled right in front of her camera, putting on a pitiful act.

“Patricia, I just wanted to make everyone happy. Why do you hate me so much?”

Chad frowned deeply. “Patricia, open this door right now and explain yourself to Ophelia.”

Looking at Ophelia’s face, where she could barely hide her smug satisfaction, I couldn’t help but mock her. “If you want to make everyone so happy, why don’t you change your bank card PIN to your birthday too?”

Ophelia stiffened, and tears instantly welled up in her eyes. “Patricia, I know you don’t like me, but you don’t have to humiliate me like this.”

Chad immediately stepped in front of her, slamming his fist against the door again. “Patricia, how can you be so malicious? Ophelia was just trying to bring the neighborhood together. Do you have to assume everyone is as toxic as you are?”

I didn’t even bother answering him and turned back toward the living room.

Outside, Ophelia’s muffled sobs drifted through the door.

“Maybe I’m just stupid. I only wanted everyone to remember today. I didn’t think Patricia would think so poorly of me! Did I do something wrong?”

The live stream chat was flying by at lightning speed.

[This woman is cold-blooded!]

[Ophelia is creating a beautiful memory for the whole building, and she still has the nerve to make a face. I guess not every girl is as kind-hearted as Ophelia.]

A few moments later, our neighbor Millie sent me a screenshot of the owners’ group chat. The entire screen was filled with people coddling Ophelia.

[Don’t cry, Ophelia. We’re all behind you.]

[Having a universal code for the building is so meaningful. Patricia Lane is just toxic. She’s jealous because she couldn’t achieve what you did!]

[We’re changing it right back after the inspection tonight anyway. What is she so wound up about?]

Someone else took it even further.

[If you ask me, Patricia’s apartment should be set to Ophelia’s birthday too. Otherwise, she doesn’t even deserve to live in our building.]

Staring at that message, my fingertips went entirely cold from anger.

My phone rang yet again. This time, it was Chad’s mother, Willow Wellington.

The second I pressed answer, she started shrieking at me. “Patricia, you’re supposed to marry my son! Have you lost your mind, ruining your relationships with the neighbors like this?”

“Ophelia is such a sweet, lovely girl. Why can’t you just get along with her?”
