Let Her Wail Chapter 08
A few months later, Elliot passed away. However, at his funeral, they could not even let the old man leave this world with dignity.
They pointed a camera straight at the body and shamelessly started a livestream.
The whole family accused me of abusing my father-in-law, and they managed to get me trending online.
Mia covered her face, her shoulders heaving as she sobbed.
“Celine is heartless. She abused our father all the time, and then she ran off with the money that was supposed to save his life!”
Robert’s eyes were red, his face smeared with tears and snot.
“Exactly! After attending that aristocratic funeral in Eravale, all she could think about was other men. She kept picking fights and demanding a divorce!”
Paige beat her chest and wailed like her heart was being ripped out.
“Oh, my dear husband! How could fate be so cruel to you? How could it saddle you with such a heartless, wicked daughter-in-law?!”
The whole family sobbed and sniveled while hateful comments poured into the stream.
“What the hell? How can a woman be this cruel?”
“She abused her father-in-law and stole the money meant to save him? Is she even human?”
“So she just gets away with it after the divorce? Someone needs to teach her a lesson!”
It did not take long for internet users to dig up everything about me.
At first, when the public outrage came crashing down, I did not want to explain myself.
Elliot had just passed away. Out of respect for the dead, I did not want to cause a scene that might disturb his rest. However, I never expected my work and personal life to fall apart so quickly.
People gathered outside my office building, shouting that I did not deserve to work there and demanding the company fire me.
The company sent me a notice telling me to stay home on unpaid leave to avoid disrupting their operations.
Even my new apartment was exposed. Security guards stood at the entrance, holding back a crowd of enraged internet users.
The property management sent me a message, warning me not to come home for a while in case something dangerous happened.
Everywhere I went, people pointed and whispered, cursing me for being heartless.
They demanded I hand over the so-called “life-saving money” and even insisted I apologize to a dead man.
That afternoon, I received a call from Prince Charles’s assistant.
“Ms. Gibson, His Highness has been following your situation and noticed you’ve become a target of public attacks.
“He wanted me to ask you if you need any assistance.”
A bunch of clowns using an online mob as their weapon? I stared at the screen full of lies and slander, then replied calmly, “This is a small matter. I can handle it myself.”
They thought they could run their mouths and spread lies about me? Did they really think I was a pushover who would just let them drag my name through the mud?
I hired bodyguards for protection and headed straight to the funeral.
The moment I walked in, Paige lunged at me like a madwoman, trying to grab my hair. My bodyguard stopped her instantly.
I pulled out my phone and tipped their livestream a hundred dollars. Then I flooded the comment section.
“The Bakers are putting on quite a show with this livestream. They must be hoping for donations, right?
“Come on, dear viewers. Don’t just watch for free.”
Mia’s face turned bright red. She screeched at me.
“Shut up! You’re the crazy woman who killed our father, and now you have the nerve to show up at his funeral and humiliate us?!”
I glanced at their follower count and let out a cold laugh.
“500 thousand people are watching. You might want to be careful what you say. You could be held legally responsible.
“You’re saying I killed him? That I ran off with money? Where’s your proof?
“If you can’t produce any, I’ll sue you for defamation!”
Robert shoved me, his eyes bloodshot.
“Celine, do you have any conscience at all? My dad just died and you’re here causing a scene at his funeral!”
I scoffed and raised an eyebrow. “You’re using a dead man as a prop to spread lies and fish for sympathy!
“You got me suspended from work. You made it so I can’t even go home. Am I not allowed to come here and demand an explanation?”
Mia glared at me, her voice shrill.
“How are we spreading lies? You’re the one who cost us the aristocratic inheritance! My father died because of you! Because there was no money left to treat him!”
That was exactly what I was waiting for. I pulled out my phone and started my own livestream.
Then I sent a request to join their livestream.
