Let Her Wail Chapter 06

Let Her Wail Chapter 06

The color drained from their faces in an instant, as if they had seen a ghost. They never imagined that I had escaped the car because Prince Charles himself had rescued me.

Mia’s lips trembled as she rushed to defend herself. “She fell asleep on her own and didn’t get out of the car with us! We didn’t lock her in on purpose!”

Robert hurried over to back her up. “That’s right! She’s always lazy and dozing off. She never does anything all day!

“Your Highness, please don’t be fooled by her! She looks gentle, but she’s capable of anything underhanded!”

Watching them slander me without a shred of guilt, my heart turned cold.

It hit me all at once. The past few years of marriage had been nothing but a complete joke.

Prince Charles grabbed a stack of surveillance photos that had just been printed and flung them in Robert’s face.

“Did you really think there were no cameras in the parking lot? Everything you did to her was captured right here! Even if she’s your wife, treating her like this is still a crime!”

Prince Charles turned to look at me, his eyes filled with undisguised sympathy.

“Ms. Gibson, I offered to call the police for you earlier, but you said there was no need.

“Look at how these people are slandering you. Are you still going to protect them?”

I shook my head again.

After all, we were in a foreign country. If this turned into an international scandal, it would be humiliating.

Prince Charles clenched his jaw and held back. He lifted his chin toward the guards.

“Drag these people out and get them out of here.”

Robert suddenly remembered why they had come in the first place. He could not let the inheritance slip away.

He puffed up and shouted. “Your Highness! I’m the Duke’s legal heir!

“You can’t abuse your position like this! You want to throw us out and strip me of my inheritance rights?

“If this blows up, it won’t look good for your reputation either!”

Prince Charles glanced at him as though looking at a lunatic.

“With blood relations as distant as yours, you think you have the right to demand an inheritance? The Duke’s will doesn’t even mention leaving anything to you!”

At those words, their faces turned green with panic.

Robert blurted out in desperation. “Your Highness, are you trying to use your status to steal our fortune?”

Prince Charles did not bother responding. He stepped aside and let Harold take the floor.

Harold stepped forward. “The Duke had no children. While you may be a legal heir by blood, the Duke’s will makes no mention of you whatsoever.

“Inheritance law is clear. The deceased’s will takes precedence over distant blood relations.”

Robert’s face went white. He shouted at the top of his lungs. “What nonsense are you spouting?! I don’t understand any of this!”

At that moment, Margaret stepped out from behind. Harold pulled the will from his briefcase.

“The Duke drafted this will while he was still alive. The first in line to inherit was this housekeeper.

“She voluntarily gave up her claim. That’s the only reason distant relatives like you were even considered!”

Robert and Mia’s faces froze. They could have kicked themselves.

They never imagined that Margaret, the woman they had dismissed so carelessly, held such an important place in the Duke’s heart.

Margaret fixed her gaze on them, her voice heavy.

“At my age, I thought giving up the inheritance would be the right thing to do, but after watching your behavior at this funeral, it’s clear you have no respect for the Duke whatsoever.

“I’ve changed my mind.”

The moment she finished speaking, Harold added, “So you can forget about inheriting the Duke’s estate. This funeral does not welcome people with no manners. Please leave immediately.”
