Let Her Wail Chapter 05

Let Her Wail Chapter 05

The color drained from Mia and Robert’s faces in an instant. Of all the moments to run into Prince Charles, it had to be while they were dragging me out.

Robert scrambled forward, his voice unsteady.

“Your Highness, please don’t misunderstand! This woman was causing a scene at the funeral. We were just trying to maintain order!”

Prince Charles let out a scornful laugh and pointed toward the door.

“Do you think we’re blind? You’re the ones who were wailing and disrupting the funeral!

“Maintain order? The ones who should be thrown out are the ones with no manners. That means you!”

Robert had not expected to be dressed down so mercilessly by the prince. His face went from pale to flushed and back again.

Meanwhile, Mia slumped to the ground, clutching her ankle as tears appeared on cue.

“Your Highness, look! I twisted my ankle because she pushed me! She bullies me like this and you’re still going to take her side?”

She was convinced her pitiful act would be enough to soften any man’s heart, but Prince Charles stared at her like she was a circus clown.

“Are you done crying? If you want to cry, do it outside! Wailing is not permitted at our funerals!”

Mia’s face burned at his cold rebuke. She whipped her head toward me, her finger trembling as she pointed.

“It’s you! You must be behind all of this! You’re really something, aren’t you? Cozying up to everyone from the waitress to Prince Charles, feeding them lies about me!”

I glanced at her and let a cold smile curl at my lips.

“You give me far too much credit. I don’t have that kind of reach. You refused to listen to reason, made a mess of things, and now you’re looking for someone else to blame!”

Before I could say more, Prince Charles slammed his hand on a nearby table.

“Enough! You were the ones wailing. You were the ones dragging her out! And now you’re twisting the truth? Do you think everyone here is blind?”

Mia saw the fury on the prince’s face and panicked, waving her hands frantically.

“Your Highness, we’re visitors from overseas! We really had no idea that wailing wasn’t allowed here!”

The noblewoman nearby spoke up immediately, her voice dripping with disdain.

“Don’t play innocent! I told you myself and you mocked me for being cold-hearted!

“The priest warned you too, yet you had the nerve to say that he didn’t understand God’s compassion.”

Harold stepped forward as well, his voice tight with anger.

“I tried to warn you not to ruin the funeral with your crying and you accused me of scheming to steal the inheritance! I’ve been practicing law for decades and I’ve never been humiliated like this!”

Seeing everyone around me simmering with anger, I decided to speak my mind as well.

“I told you before we even came here that wailing is forbidden at Eravalen aristocratic funerals.

“But one of you was too busy chasing men, and the other was too focused on climbing the social ladder. Did any of you take that warning seriously?

“Now that you’ve made a mess of everything, you want to pin it all on me? Have you no shame?”

A calculating glint flickered in Mia’s eyes. She raised her voice and started spinning lies.

“Celine! You’re the one who told me to cry! You said it would win everyone’s sympathy and help us meet more nobles!

“You even said to ignore anyone who tried to stop me because they definitely had bad intentions!

“Now that we’re being scolded, you’re turning around and blaming me? What is wrong with you?”

Robert immediately backed her up, doubling down.

“That’s right! It was all Celine’s idea! She said she knew aristocratic customs better than anyone!

“She told us to cry as hard as we could. She said the more heartbroken we looked, the more respectful it would seem!”

Paige shoved her way forward and spat at me. “Exactly! Don’t be fooled by her delicate act!

“This was all her scheme! If anyone should be punished, it’s her alone! My son and daughter have nothing to do with this!”

I stared at the three of them in disgust. I could have slapped myself for being so blind in the past. I must have been out of my mind to choose this man and marry into this rotten family.

Before I could even open my mouth, Prince Charles slammed his hand on the table again.

“This woman was just rescued from your car, half-dead! Bullying her wasn’t enough? Now you’re dumping all the blame on her too?!

you dare say she’s framing you? Do you think I’m blind, or just stupid?”
