Betrayal and Regret: The Donna Lost Her Child Chapter 02

Betrayal and Regret: The Donna Lost Her Child Chapter 02

Yes. His older brother saved me. Back then I was just a fresh college graduate.

I happened to walk into a shootout between two families. His older brother pulled me out of the hail of bullets.

I fell in love with that man. But he was already engaged to Chloe, so I let it go.

My marriage to Ryan was his older brother’s doing too. He pushed us together.

I never thought I’d wronged Ryan in any way. I just never expected that after his older brother died, he’d end

up with Chloe.

Just thinking about it sharpened the ache in my chest.

Ryan tried to snatch the baby from me. The next second, my child seemed to sense something and burst out

wailing.

He coughed up a pill. I stared at the familiar shape in my hand. A sleeping pill.

Goddamn it! They gave a sleeping pill to a baby less than ten days old!

My heart seized with agony. I let out a scream and held the pill up in front of him with trembling hands.

“Ryan! You drugged our baby with sleeping pills just to keep him quiet?”

Ryan paused, clearly caught off guard.

“It wasn’t me!”

My bloodshot eyes shot to Chloe.

But before I could say a word, she ducked behind Ryan.

“Grace, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have let Ryan bring me here to clear my head. But you shouldn’t give the baby sleeping pills just to frame me. I’ll leave right now. Please, stop hurting your own child.”

As she pretended to walk away in tears, Ryan yanked her into his arms.

Then he snatched the baby from me.

“Grace! You schemed against your own child? If you hadn’t drugged him with sleeping pills, why would he

suddenly start screaming?”

I shook my head frantically, choking on sobs as my baby’s heart-wrenching cries filled my ears. I couldn’t

speak.

How could I ever hurt my own child? He was inside me for ten months.

When I lunged forward to take him back, Ryan ordered his bodyguards to lock me up.

I was locked inside the villa he had just bought for Chloe.

Everything there was decorated to Chloe’s taste.

He knew she loved pink, so every room was done in shades of pink.

He knew she was forgetful, so he left thoughtful little notes everywhere, written in his own handwriting.

Afraid she might hurt herself, he placed first-aid kits in every room.

But I was his wife-and he didn’t know a single thing I liked.

When I told him I liked dolls, he called me childish.

When I said childbirth hurt, he called me dramatic.

I knew he didn’t like materialistic women, so I never dared ask him for a single gift-not even on our

anniversary.

But then he turned around and bought Chloe a massive beachfront villa.

I couldn’t tell anymore if Chloe was his older brother’s widow or his mistress.

The pain was so overwhelming my whole body went numb. I couldn’t move. Tears slid from the corners of my eyes without stopping.

When the anesthesia on my abdomen finally wore off, the waves of pain jolted me back to my senses.

I grabbed my phone and called Ryan.

“Ryan, I’m begging you-take the baby to the hospital. He’s so weak. He won’t last much longer!”

“If you take him to the hospital, I’ll do whatever you want. I won’t fight you on anything. Please!”

The villa doors were locked. I couldn’t get out. All I could do was grovel.

Meanwhile, the baby in Ryan’s arms was burning up, and he’d likely swallowed some of that sleeping pill

Finally, Ryan gave in.

“I’ll take him to the-”

But then Chloe’s soft, delicate voice cut in.

“Ryan, the baby will be fine. I took parenting classes before mine was born. These are all normal things for

newborns. He’ll be better once it cools down tonight.”

“Besides, don’t we have the beach party later?”

No. No! NO!

Don’t believe her!

“Grace, when did you turn into the exact kind of person I despise? You just don’t want me with Chloe. I’m only

trying to help her through losing her husband!”

He believed her. His own wife’s words were just lies meant to deceive him.

“I can’t reason with a jealous woman like you. Come to the beach tonight and apologize to Chloe in front of

everyone!”

Jealous?

I laughed bitterly inside. If he had ever given me any sense of security, would I have become this way?

Ever since Chloe lost her husband, Ryan had been taking care of her around the clock.

Worried about her safety, he brought her into our villa against my objections.

When Chloe cried at night, he held her in bed and wiped her tears.

Even on the night I went into labor, just because she said she was feeling down-

He left me on the operating table without a second thought and took Chloe to watch fireworks.

I stared blankly at the villa around me. The last shred of hope in my heart withered and died. I accepted the truth: Ryan did not love me.

But my child’s life was in danger. I had to get out. I had to save him.
